Composer or Sounds of the ZR? Gonna buy one of em to fill my last bank. I have the phatt,xl,and beat garden and make hip-hop though the phatt rom is not really suited for me other than the bass and kit patches. I'd like pianos, organs, strings&brass sections mainly though guitars can be useful too. Any/all input would be awesome!

Should be able to compare them soon, as my ZR should arrive next week and join the Composer in its native P2K. However, I feel a bit surprised, that you make hip-hop and Phatt is "not really suited for you". I found it really Thinn (rather than Phatt), except for the drums and percussion - and it was the main reason for me to order both XROM and QROM. Cheers, Bruno

Composer is a nice bread and butter ROM because it has 1024 presets instead of the usual 512 and you can also use the Proteus 2500 (Pop Collection) presets that have been converted to work with it. I haven't heard anything but the demos of the Sounds of the ZR/Halo ROM, but one would expect at least the piano to be better than the one in the Composer/Pop ROMs. I wonder how complimentary they are to each other - do they fight for the same territory or do they cover each other's respective weaknesses? I also wonder if the SotZR/Halo sound set is representative of the "Ensoniq sound" of their '90s synths. On Apr 16, 2011, at 12:10 PM, Matt wrote:Composer is very general purpose... bread and butter sounds. if you want more specific:
orchestra:
9061: Siedlaczek Orchestra 32 MB ROM.
9085: Orchestral Session Vol. 1 32 MB ROM - standard in Virtuoso 2000.
9086: Orchestral Session Vol. 2 32 MB ROM - standard in Virtuoso 2000.
organ:
9083: Definitive B-3 32 MB ROM - standard in B-3.
piano:
9088: Sounds of the ZR featuring the Perfect Piano 32 MB ROM - standard in Ensoniq Halo
But it sounds like you only have one slot. If one rom can't give you everything you need you can either get a proteus 2000 rack module or you can get software, reason works great. On Sat, Apr 16, 2011 at 11:01 AM, Bruno <brunorc@...> wrote:2011/4/16 Akrons Secret <akronbestkeptsecret@...>:

Both are a mixed bag. Capable bread and butter romplers with both good and bad sounds scattered throughout. I had both in an MP-7 for a while and had a huge selection of sounds. I prefer the ZR simply because it has a couple of string sounds and a bass guitar wave that I find very useful so I took out the Composer but either would have worked fine for me. If you must have pianos then the ZR may suit you better. It is a fair leap better than anything on the Composer or Phatt. It's not great but is works well in any given pattern. I'd say it's about the same quality as a Nord Electro 2. Neither are particularly good for solo piano work but both sit well in a mix. Also: with either of them in the MP-7 I really had little time for the Phatt Rom other than for some kits and synth sounds. If you have the cash, I'd store away the Phatt (keep it for resale value of the MP-7), pick up either the Composer or ZR and save up for whichever specialized ROM suits your music best.Re: [xl7] Composer vs Sounds of the ZR

Here you'll find the Sound of the ZR-76 and a few P2500 factory demoes (which are Composer ROM based) : http://poumtschak.free.fr/E-MU/ Best advocate for the ZR (and Beat Garden ROM) were Nifflas Silen's tunes, which sold me the Command Station basically. You can search for his messages on this list Web UI at Yahoogroups : http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/xl7/msearch?query=nifflas&submit=Search&charset=ISO-8859-1 Seems all his website are gone, but for the record I saved all his files (hope he's ok, if he's still around)... ^^ For a few details about the gear used, check out his August 16 2002 message : http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/xl7/message/4046 And the webarchive.org for various remnants : http://replay.web.archive.org/20020714232430/http://www.nifflas.com/music.html Gee, almost 10 years already.
