Oops, forgot one

Oops, forgot one

2002-03-22 by erik_magrini@Baxter.com

One more Song Mode question.

I keep getting the asterisk popping up telling me to save the song, even
though I haven't touched anything at all. Very annoying as it happens
repeatably, and even going through the Event and Note list editors, I
still can't see what's been changed that would require me to resave.
Ideas?

it could just be that you have external tempo selected and it's trying to assign that to your song (The incomming tempo) or something related. Or it could be playing with the mutes and wants you to save something besides the song! Just a guess, but hey

I have not messed with song mode very much, but the asterisk seems to
pop up many times when I enter a mode that can change data (whether I
have changed anything or not). This is not always the case but it
seems to do it fairly often. There are other cases where the asterisk
does not show up when something saveable has changed. This proboably
has to do with how they determine when a savable change has been
made. Rather than tie the flag to any change in saveable data
(relatively complex and processor intensive) they set it when certain
operations are performed. For operations that are difficult to track
or require precise timing it is more simple and reliable to set the
flag when you enter the mode rather than add a lot of code to track
everything you do within the mode.

The asterisk doesn't always mean something needs to be saved. More
specifically, it means that whatever you just did needed to use the
"edit buffer", and therefore, any other unsaved song is no longer
edited. Unfortunately, the way the system is architected, entering any
record mode or list edit needs to place the current sequence into the
edit buffer, regardless of whether you actually make changes.

BTS?

Hey, what is the plan for bts/"BEATS"? I mean, what's it supposed to do,
if/when it's implemented?

General MIDI specifics

2002-03-28 by just john

Okay, I have the ZR sound card that purports to have the whole GM set, but
its little booklet doesn't have any documentation on using the sounds via
GM.

Is the XL-7 configured to recoqnize GM automatically?

(Yeah, I know I should just try throwing GM at it and see what happens, but
that's the obvious answer.)

No, it's not. Most CC's is different, not to mention the way you
change bank / preset (all this mess with cc 0, 32 and program change
messages), so you'll have to change some things manually (edit
the .mid files) in order to get this work.

I don't recommend the XL-7 for GM playback. The only thing you get
with the ZR board is the GM presets, but not complete GM compability.

Perhaps you could find a cheap GM module at ebay.com - since GM is,
to tell the truth, a quite lousy standard (imho) most pro synths
doesn't support it. (Yet I can of course see a reason to have a GM
module in order to play GM .mid files)

I already have a little Yamaha CBX-K1XG GM keyboard, designed with computer
users in mind. It's staggeringly versatile for something that cost me $200
or so. F'rinstance, I currently use it as the controller for my XL-7, AND
as the monitor. (It has mildly decent stereo speakers and aux sound input,
as well as a local control shutoff.)
