I have not messed with song mode very much, but the asterisk seems to pop up many times when I enter a mode that can change data (whether I have changed anything or not). This is not always the case but it seems to do it fairly often. There are other cases where the asterisk does not show up when something saveable has changed. This proboably has to do with how they determine when a savable change has been made. Rather than tie the flag to any change in saveable data (relatively complex and processor intensive) they set it when certain operations are performed. For operations that are difficult to track or require precise timing it is more simple and reliable to set the flag when you enter the mode rather than add a lot of code to track everything you do within the mode.
