recording midi to correct track

recording midi to correct track

2009-03-30 by innovine1

Hi!
When recording, how do I get my xl-7 to record midi on channel 1 to track1, and midi on channel 2 to track 2? The xl-7 is recording everything to the currently selected track, and then sending it out on that tracks associated midi channel, ie, if I've selected track3, all recorded midi (on any channel) gets recorded to, and played back on track3 (which outputs everything on midi channel 3). This is with Rechannelize input set to OFF, of course.

I basically want to press record, and have incoming midi on channel 2 get recorded on track 2, while incoming midi on track1 gets recorded to track 1.
How do I get this working?

/ Niall

Unfortunately, the XL-7 can only record into one track at a time. There is, however, two workarounds.

First is to get familiar with Multi tracks. These allow you to have 16 channels worth of data in a single track. Perhaps this might even be better than limiting yourself to 16 MIDI channels across the 16 sequencer tracks.

Alternatively, if the end result is really that you want stuff spread across multiple tracks, you can record it into one track (probably requiring Multi - I can't remember) and then use Copy to copy the track to the clipboard, then use the "Explode Clipboard Channels to Tracks" command. This will take what you copied and divide it up by channel into your tracks.

Let's take a step back for a second though - what exactly are you trying to do? If you're really recording multitrack stuff (like from another sequencer) than you're best off with the explode command. If you're really just trying to use your external keyboard to switch recording channels, than really, turning rechannelize on and letting the XL-7 do the switching is the way to go.

Hey Aaron,
Thanks for such a swift reply. I'm using the xl-7 to sequence my virus kb synth. I do think I can send all the virus knobs, buttons and keyboard on one channel to the xl-7 and let it switch parts.. I am also keeping each part on its own midi channel so I can toggle the mutes on and off on the xl-7.

...my xl 7 is beautiful thing....it's a computer in a great box....I'm gunna learn how to program it...before I buy Abelton and go all software---but......... I'm gunna buy aBelton as my midi editor and load those sequences into that yellow box via e-loader, that way i avoid, on the one hand going software and on the other.... the small green interface....abElton and EMU xl7...marraige made in heaven...

Ah.

Another feature I probably noticed in the manual and thought, "Why do that?"

And now an answer emerges!

At this rate, I'll know all this gadget's secrets by the year 2066.
