Why does changing the Track/Channel change the sound?

Why does changing the Track/Channel change the sound?

2002-02-22 by just john

This is probably an obvious oversight on my part, easily fixed, but I still
don't know why hitting the + or - keys to change Track/Channel sometimes
seems to change what gets routed through what effects. At times it's kinda
startling, when playing a pattern.

(Clarification: I mean sounds that one wouldn't think would be associated
with the Track/Channel you're moving from or to are affected.)

Ah, are you talking about during sequencer playback or recording?

Sounds like you're in omni mode...

That would cause the current preset (on the channel you just switched to) to
choose which effects to use. Make sure you're in multi mode (in the MIDI menu).

RE: [xl7] Why does changing the Track/Channel change the sound?

huh,
It actually sounds like you might have alternative midi channel info associated
with each track from a MIDI type 1 import where a track in the original had a
different channel assigned. When you play back a track it still transmits on
the original channel (including channels you recorded with from your keyboard)
not the same numbered track.

This might help:
From the FAQ:
-How are Presets, Tracks and MIDI channels related to each other, it all seems a
bit confusing?
The organization of the Command Stations can be a bit confusing at first when it
comes to the Track versus MIDI channel assignments. Once you understand how this
relationship works, you'll see just how flexible these units are in terms of
sequencing and MIDI. The basic concept to understand, is that a sequencer Track
can be any assigned to control any MIDI channel, or all of them! So just because
you're writing on Track 3, doesn't mean that you're stuck using only MIDI
channel 3. You can freely assign any MIDI channels to any of the Tracks as you
see fit. It's even possible to play all 16 MIDI channels on a single sequencer
Track, giving you control over a possible 512 MIDI channels (16a Tracks, 16b
Tracks, multiplied by 16 MIDI channels each)! However, because you can only use
32 internal channels, and 32 external channels at once, you are realistically
only able to play 64 tracks at once, up to the polyphony limit of 128 voices.

One of the most common mistakes people run into, is thinking that they are
changing the active sequencer Track, when they are in reality only giving that
Track a different MIDI channel. Example: Say you have selected Track 4 in
Pattern mode as the active Track (as seen in the upper left hand corner of the
display). If you press Preset to go into Preset mode, the Track number still is
in the upper corner of the display right? Wrong, in Preset mode that number is
the MIDI channel assigned to the Track, not the Track number. Therefore changing
this number while in Preset mode does not select a new Track, but changes the
MIDI channel assign to that Track. A very important thing to keep in mind while
you're sequencing! It is also possible to change the MIDI Channel in the Note
and Event List Editors for each note/event as well, should you have the need.
All of this provides very flexible sequencing options, that unfortunately can be
confusing if you're not aware of what's going on.

That may have been it. It's in multi mode now, and I can't reproduce the
situation (which was ocurring in playback) -- I was diddling the mode in
the recent past.

Thanks!

You're changing the MIDI channel, not the track. Make sure that you're
not in Preset Edit mode when pressing Track +-/-.

Wrong. I wasn't in preset mode.

Not trying to correct you, just FYI for others too. Remember you can be
in Preset Mode even while editing Patterns too.
