dirty data wheel & buttons

dirty data wheel & buttons

2008-04-19 by Atom Smasher

as far as i can tell, my XL7 was probably from the first production batch.
it's running v2.00 and everything is working well, except the buttons and
data wheel.

is there anything i should know before i take it apart and spray some
contact cleaner into the buttons and data wheel?

is it possible/feasible/desirable to upgrade the data wheel encoder to the
type used on later units?

thanks...

Yes. You shouldn't need to open up the unit to get the cleaner in the wheel. Make sure to put it in the side, not the shaft.

As for the buttons, I believe they simply pull off. I could be wrong though. If you do open the unit up, you'll have to take the front panel boards off.

BE CAREFUL!!! You absolutely need to have the unit face down while removing the front panels, otherwise the light pipes (over each LED) will fall out and scatter all over. Trust me, it's not fun to scour your desk for all these clear pin-sized things. I know people who've put a dab of superglue on each of them from the front to hold them in place if you're planning on doing it more than once. In any case, be careful, there's lots of parts held in by pressing between the front panel boards and the chassis.

All in all, I wouldn't recommend it. I'm pretty sure you can pull the buttons without it.

They're all the same. And... they all suck. I don't think I have a single unit that has a reliable wheel anymore. Sigh. The latter units had a metal bracket over the encoder to hold it down, but they didn't do much good.
