XL7 > XL7 transfers

2007-06-28 by gongworks

Greetings Experts!

I have (2) XL7's here, trying to get all USER preset and patterns from
1 (1) to another (2). I have transferred the (4) ROMS from (1) to (2)
and they are all in the same positions. When I do a "Send Bank x USER
PRESETS command (1) ro (2), the process seems normal but when it is
completed, on (2) I have the names of each preset, but none of the L1-2-
3-4 ROM pointers = each Level reads "???? (not installed" message.

I can program presets on (2) and that works fine.

Have Tried E-loader, it triesbut fails.

Trying to save a bunch o work, so

Thanks in advance!

Ed

Ed, I have never had 2 units side-by-side to transfer banks like you
are trying to do; but you might try transferring the banks from Unit
1 to Unit 2 with the ROMS installed in Unit 1 and then move the ROMS
to Unit 2. Another option to try would be to store the sysex banks on
a computer as an intermediate step. (I use SONAR.)

It makes perfect sense that you'd get the "not installed" message in
the unit that doesn't have the ROMs, but I don't understand why you'd
get that in the one that has the ROMs.

Until you mentioned it, I had no thoughts as to what might happen to
the integrity of the data if you try to transmit user presets with
the ROMs removed. I'd be interested in doing a comparison, though. If
you want, send me (a) one (or more) user bank(s)--in sysex file
format from the unit 1 without the ROMs and (b) the same user bank(s)
from unit 1 with the ROMs back in there.

Are you saying e-loader doesn't transfer patterns? (I assume you are
saving them to computer first and then either switching the XL-7s or
the midi setup--if you have them connected on two port.)

Is the sysex ID the same on both XL-7s?

Hi Steve! thanks for your thoughts, to clear up my mis-descriptions and add other responses:

Ed, I have never had 2 units side-by-side to transfer banks like you
are trying to do; but you might try transferring the banks from Unit
1 to Unit 2 with the ROMS installed in Unit 1 and then move the ROMS
to Unit 2.
**I tried this - a no-go, nothing showed in unit (2) which (at the time) had -0-ROMs

Another option to try would be to store the sysex banks on
a computer as an intermediate step. (I use SONAR.)

**Did this too, (forgot to mention) in Cubase LE. All the MIDI data shows on each Cubase MIDI track (Bank 00-01-02-03)..but when transferred even tho it shows as exiting the MIDI System NO MIDI info shows up during transfer to XL7 (2)

It makes perfect sense that you'd get the "not installed" message in
the unit that doesn't have the ROMs, but I don't understand why you'd
get that in the one that has the ROMs.

**this is where I canmake ie more clear, I waited to have ROMS installed in unit (2) before trying the USER SEND commands..results as reported: Names: yes. Voice data: no.

Until you mentioned it, I had no thoughts as to what might happen to
the integrity of the data if you try to transmit user presets with
the ROMs removed.
**highest ups from (ex)- EMU claim it is AOK as that info is stored in a prioritary place oin the MoBo. Indeed as I look at Preset Voice information on the Xl7 (1) - (which now has no ROMs) all data appears as thought the ROMs were there excpt of course the L1-2-3-4 data which now also reads "??? not installed" etc

I'd be interested in doing a comparison, though. If
you want, send me (a) one (or more) user bank(s)--in sysex file
format from the unit 1 without the ROMs and (b) the same user bank(s)
from unit 1 with the ROMs back in there.

**I will do it! Thanks. The ROMs are headed right back to machine one so I can audio-reocrd everythink before trying this again)

Are you saying e-loader doesn't transfer patterns? (I assume you are
saving them to computer first and then either switching the XL-7s or
the midi setup--if you have them connected on two port.)

**I am actually primitive - moving MIDI chords. E-loader tries for about 10 secomds and then fives failed messgae. Ironically one see MIDI data flowing out toward XL7 (2) but onw does not see MIDI data coming into XL7 (2) - this is odd because otherwise MIDI IN Xl7 (2) seems to work...

Is the sysex ID the same on both XL-7s?
**affirmative yes thank again Steve for your time and input

  Thanks Steve!

Greetings for those still following this saga for the archives here is the status:

  (2) Xl7's connected together, (1) has no ROMs and ALL the data. (2) has ALL the ROMS and (none) of the data. Objectibve is to get all data from (1) to (2).

Afrer many attempts I finally got presets User Bank 00 to completely 100% succesffully transfer to XL7 (2). I have no idea why.

Question for Aaron

2007-07-01 by ed mann

Greetings Aaron,

thanks for your time in reading this:

In your opinion, do you think:

  (A) Is it possible to transfer all a preset data from Xl7 to Xl7 if (1) Xl7 has ROM(s) and (1) does not?

  2) In order to sucessfully transfer all data from xl7 to Xl7, is it neccesassry for both Xl7's to have the same ROM setups internally in each machine?

Thanks very much Aaron I do appreciate your time.

  Ed
