Which MP-7 to buy?

Which MP-7 to buy?

2006-04-19 by video_link

Hello.
I want to get a MP-7 and found a few.
1. A pawnshop has one for $395 basic unit only.
2. A guy on Ebay who lives in my city has one on Ebay for $200 so far,
basic unit only.
3. Also on Ebay, a person has one at current bid of $315 fully loaded
with cards, hard copy manual, light, and software.
3. The Guitar Center has one for $499 and it something called a SIG
card. I played it and it sounds wonderful and has a 30 day warranty.
Another customer in the store was playing it and says he has one and
it is on par with an Akai MPC in capabilities, but no sampler. He
suggested I get that one because of the SIG card and it has sounds a
basic one does not.

After looking at other drum units and synths, the MP-7 is money well
spent because of the sound module, drum effects and programability.
Also, I can use it live for sounds, drums, or both.

Which do you all suggest I go for?
Thanks.

The one on e-bay hasn't met the reserved yet. If the seller has
good ratings for reliability and customer satisfaction, I would
expect that one (with the 4 ROMS, including Protean Drums) to go for
between $500-650. If you got it for $450 fully loaded and it is in
good working condition, it would be a steal. Just my opinion.

Thanks Steve for your input,

I decided not to take my chances on Ebay and bought the unit at the
Guitar Center. It actually has two additional modules added to it.
Plus, I have the original support and module update CDs. I paid $450
plus tax for the unit and have a 30 day warranty.

It sounds like you made a good choice, esp. with two additional ROMS,
and the security of the warranty and support. (Out of curiosity,
which ROMS were included?)

For the record, the e-bay unit went for $635.

Re: Which MP-7 to buy?

The MP-7 that went for $635 had the Protean Drums ROM as well as Mo'
Phatt, X Lead V2, & Beat Garden ROMS (plus gooseneck lamp and SPDIF
grounding wire mod. (See blurb below.)

As for E-Mu going soft, I think it was a little over 2 years ago
that Creative desigated E-Mu hardware as legacy gear. (Search the
archives here using the word "legacy.")

At present, you can still get pdf manuals and the 2003 OS at
www.emu.com.

BLURB (from the MP-7):
This auction is for a used E-MU MP7 128 voice synthesizer, fully
expanded with the Mo' Phatt, X Lead V2, Beat Garden, and Protean
Drums sound roms, and updated to the latest OS version 2.0. It is
in excellent condition, and has been kept in a smoke free home
studio. Also included are the original instruction manual
(paperback), support CD's (which include E-Loader software for
saving and downloading songs and patterns, pdf manuals, preset
patterns, and OS), a 12V gooseneck lamp, and power cord. This unit
still has the original plastic covering on the LED screen, and
original box. The only modification is a ground wire attached from
the unit to the SPDIF output to prevent audio dropouts when using
digital outputs. This is a well known issue discussed in the XL-
7/MP-7 users group @ yahoo.com, and the modification was taken from
the discussions there. I really hate to sell this unit as it is my
last hardware synth, but I am a converted Reason user now and need
the money and extra space in my studio. Below is more info on this
unit:
