New owner ... pattern record and cubase ... bug???

New owner ... pattern record and cubase ... bug???

2002-02-09 by grimleyj2000

I just got a XL-7 and immediately upgraded to 1.18. I am having
problems when I have the XL-7 synced to Cubase and I want to jump
into grid record mode (hold play then hit record). The XL-7 will
only allow me to record with the preset from the track I originally
had selected. So for instance I start with track 9 for bass and I
then change to track 1 for kick, it will only record more bass notes
even though the pads are playing the kick when I hit them. It gets
worse ....
I hit stop on Cubase then RTZ the XL-7. Then I go back into grid
record on the XL-7 without starting Cubase. I have the same
problem ... it is still recording bass notes even though I have
selected track 01A for kick. Changing pattern and recording from
there does not fix it. I have to reboot the XL-7 then everything is
OK ... until I sync to Cubase again of course. Is this a MIDI issue
or a horrible bug?
Second problem ... when in step record ... how to I go back a step?
I know I can go forward by hitting Play but ...
And lastly ... in realtime record, what is the easiest way to delete
or overwrite a bum note when recording in a loop?
Thanks for your help,
Justin.

-- Check to make sure you are not just scrolling to a new preset on
the bass TRACK. You have to be on the Kick track to record kick
otherwise it will record more bass notes (it's MIDI notes).
Changing presets doesn't necessarily mean you are changing tracks.

Second problem ... when in step record ... how to I go back a step?
> I know I can go forward by hitting Play but ...

-- While the XL7 is playing in grid mode you don't have an option to
select which inbetween bars to loop, XL7 loops entirely from the
first bar to the last and repeats that cycle. If you want to edit
certain inbetween bars/measures, stop the xl7 and select 'bar/beat',
highlight 'edit' and use the scroll dial to navigate to your desired
bar/measure.

And lastly ... in realtime record, what is the easiest way to delete
> or overwrite a bum note when recording in a loop?

-- go into the pattern edit menu and scroll to the note list
editor. from there you can choose which track to view your record
notes...it will probably as you to choose 'enter' to view all
notes. from there you can erase volume and/or duration. you can
also use the erase events or erase notes if you get crafty.

hope that helps a little.

Tommy,
Thanks for the reply ... appreciated ... however ...

Problem 1:
I am actually changing tracks by using the Track/Channel buttons to
the left of the green LCD. Again, when I reset the XL-7 everything
works as expected again.

Problem 2:
I am referring to Step Record mode and not Grid mode.

Problem 3:
Got it ... cheers!

Justin.

Re: [xl7] New owner ... pattern record and cubase ... bug???

2002-02-11 by erik_magrini@Baxter.com

I am having problems when I have the XL-7 synced to Cubase and I want to
jump into grid record mode (hold play then hit record). The XL-7 will
only allow me to record with the preset from the track I originally had
selected. So for instance I start with track 9 for bass and I then change
to track 1 for kick, it will only record more bass notes even though the
pads are playing the kick when I hit them.

>>>This can be very confusing on the XL-7, as the track select buttons to
the left of the LCD select differnt things depending on which screen/mode
you're in. First of all, realize that any track, can be any MIDI channel,
they're not fixed assignments. While extremely flexible, this can also be
very confusing too, especially if start moving around while recording!
Here's a quick breakdown:

While in Pattern mode, those buttons do change the track as you mentioned.
However, if you press Preset to select a new Preset, they now control the
MIDI Channel, not the track number. So while you may been on track 9
originally, pressing the track select buttons while looking at the preset
name means you're just changing the channel used on THAT track (#9). Your
best bet is to make sure you leave Preset mode, select the correct track,
then go back into Preset mode to scroll through your sounds. Also, if
you're doing GRID recording, pay close attention to what channel is shown
in the display when you enter this mode, as it defaults to the last
channel you recorded on, NOT the current track! Read my FAQ in the files
section of this group for more info on this relationship. <<<

Second problem ... when in step record ... how to I go back a step? I
know I can go forward by hitting Play but ...

>>>Nope, you can't do it. Step-time record is pretty rudimentary
currently, you can't tie notes either :( <<<

And lastly ... in realtime record, what is the easiest way to delete or
overwrite a bum note when recording in a loop?

>>>I believe you hold down that note while pressing ERASE as the pattern
plays. <<<

Thanks for your help

>>>De nada, welcome to our group! <<<

rEalm,
Yup, that works ... I have seen a couple of quirks though where I
needed to exit record, and re-enable it before it would let me
change track. This may have been me just getting confused again,
although If I can reliably recreate the steps involved i will post
to the forum.
Thanks again,
Justin.

Anytime you're bouncing between tracks while recording, it can get
confusing. I had the same issues until I realized that REC mode sometimes
defaults to the last track you were recording, not always the current on.
Weird, but I'm sure the Emu techs are on it. It pays to always check that
little track/channel indicator in the upper left of the screen.
