I am a sound designer by trade so making new patches
is not a problem, but what I mean is which rom we'll
give me some good samples to manipulate that might be
harder to mold on a soft synth. I'm thinking the
world one. If there's anywhere I could hear some demo
sounds?

TIA for assistance!

Did you check out the links on the 2 ROMs I sent you ? For those 2, the Rob Papen website has sound examples.

The Emu site used to have World ROM examples but I can find it anymore.....

The world rom is mostly drums and percussion, maybe not the best source
for devising unique new sounds.
Also very difficult to find. The orchestral roms might give you some
sounds that are different from soft synths, and still have some
potential for mangling.
But really for experimenting with sound design, by the time you're
finished screwing with the sound, there's not much difference between
starting with an oboe and starting with a square wave.
I find that the XL-7 excels for bread-and-butter stuff - synth and
instrument sounds, polyphony, sequencing and arpeggiating, nice panel
controls for real time..
For sound design, if you don't like soft synths I would recommend a Nord
Modular G2.

Best place to find demos of sounds is probably asking here on the list,
maybe someone can volunteer to do a few.

I disagree strongly. The sounds are fantastically strange and original,
and a great tool for Sound Design.

True. Too true.

I prefer the Access Virus for a lot of reasons. I find the latest Clavia
gear to have a crappy build quality, and with its reliance on PC
software, it will be basically useless in 25 years.

Re: [xl7] Re: about roms

The virus is a fine synth, however it's a virtual analog.
The original poster specifically said experimental and unique.
Unless you want to use reaktor or supercollider or kyma or some other
software based approach,
you can't touch the versatility of a G2. I have no problems with the
build quality.
Useless in 25 years? It will still do exactly what it does today, just
like the virus.
However, by then I expect that lots of new and better things will have
come along.
Anyway I'll be 75 years old then, so maybe I'll only be interested in
the old stuff!

Hi Greg

I too am interested in the capabilities of the Nord Modular but just realized what Matt meant about 25 years from now......we would have to find a working PC that could run the software because by then, the PCs we know now will be as the Atari ST is to us now, a great beginning but superseded by new hardware 100 times faster and a new operating system.......

But I guess that's no reason not to have fun now....

And back to the original question, I think the World expansion is
awesome for exotic sound design... IF you can find/afford one!

I wanted a G2, badly, until I actually had one here. It just didn't feel
like a keeper.

Re: about roms

Yeh, what I meant was I couldn't find any sounds for
the world rom. BUT thanks to whoever said that it was
mostly percussion. I will hardly be using the xl-7
for any drum stuff, textures ect b/c i have the esx
and ableton... so mostly monophonic leads and some
poly pads.

The "beat garden" sounds are varied at least, I think
I will look out for it.

Oh and thanks also for the flight tips :)

Re: about roms

Oh Jesus, let me apoligize first b/c I've been reading the threads as
a daily digest so I've been behind a bit. Just realized the err of my
ways :o

As mentioned, I have the esx for textures and general sampling. But I
also have the virus <kc> and yeah it's good for the dark n' dirty
basic sound design. So that invalidates the vintage rom and
orchestral rom.

So it would be between the beat garden and the world exp. The world's
rareness makes it more apealing, even if there is the module itself,
it wouldn't have the possibilities that the rom would have inside the
command station. But I think that I'll just get the beat garden b/c
the variety is enough to get some serious patch action.

Bah, i just want both... there a world rom on the 'bay for $265? Is
that about the going rate then?

TIA as always!!

Me too, 90% of my XX-7 sound designs are using the World Rom now, there's
some fantastic samples on there for manipulating.

Yeah, they are pretty hard to find these days, that price looks about
right. I think there's an Emu X version coming out soon, but not sure
entirely. I guess we'll know more in a few days once AES starts. Emu has
already said they'll have some new products coming out then, though my
guess it's more software based stuff.
