The "Contest" is on, here's the details

The "Contest" is on, here's the details

2004-08-11 by erik_magrini@Baxter.com

Ok all, sounds like we have enough interest to make this worth doing, so
here's all the details and guidelines:

- All songs must be entirely composed using a Command Station only (or
P2500 for Steve), you may use a midi keyboard for note entry if you want
to though. NO computer sequencing, arps from external gear, or Karma
functions allowed. Only two tracks from each participant will be allowed.

- All songs must be 32 measures in TOTAL length (plus any reverb/delay
tails), at a reasonable tempo (ie 65 - whatever BPM). If you really need
a tempo lower than this and have a good reason why, email me privately to
discuss. No half-tempo or time signature tricks (ie 2/4) to make that 32
measures seem longer. :)

- You are responsible for the hosting of your song, so doing an anonynmous
contest is not possible. I've been looking into trying to get a single
site to host these on, but haven't had much luck finding something that
would be easy for everyone to upload to (and I don't have the time to
manage it anyway). Hopefully depending on the number of entries and file
sizes, we will also be able to host these in the files section of our
yahoogroup, but Yahoo's bandwidth limitations on file downloads will
prohibit us from using this as our primary storage space. All MP3's
should be encoded at 192kbps or less please.

- All songs will due on Friday, September 24th. That gives you all PLENTY
of time to submit something, and I do hope a lot of people participate.
This is all just for fun, so there's no reason to be bashful if you're
just getting started. If nothing else, it's a great way to get feedback
and ideas from others on things to improve on. So you're really doing
yourself a disservice by not participating. ;p

- Voting will be via a standard Yahoo groups poll, with each voter picking
the best track to vote for. In the event of a tie, the songwriters in
question will have 1 week to make changes to their songs, and then we'll
have another vote off for just those two (or more) tracks. If people want
to add alternate categories for this contest, you're free to set up polls
on your own, I just don't want to manage this.

- Once your track is completed, send me an email with the address where
people can download it, your name (email and real), and the song title.

That's it, if I'm forgetting anything, let me know! Have fun and get to
workm, it's only 32 measures, so make 'em count!

If needed, I'd allow my Yahoo briefcase to be used for song storage. (It's 80meg) I don't
know if Yahoo allows uploading from others, though. Just a thought. Now, I gotta get my
ass in gear and finish what I'm working on.

It's not so much a storage problem as a bandwidth one. Do you know what
the allowed bandwidth is for a Yahoo briefcase?

I can host the stuff if need be, but everything would have to be set through

I had the same bandwidth question myself, but couldn't find any info. on it. Since I paid
for the larger storage space, I'm thinking that it may not be as limited as the "free" groups
are.

I spent tme online and on the phone trying to understand the
differences between Yahoo's Basic and Premium Briefcase. I don't
recall them now, but I finally found someone who knew something at
the support line for premium services. Access and Bandwidth are very
limited with the basic service.

If you could host, that would be great, but you would have to manage that,
and provide info for everyone on how to get their songs to you :)
