A better sequencer than the XL-7

A better sequencer than the XL-7

2002-01-26 by nifflas

After a couple of months I have to realize that I have to get another
sequencer.

Now I need you advice. I want a MIDI sequencer that is what I
expected the XL-7 to be.

* No bugs, or at least very few of them.
* the MIDI sequencer should do NOTHING, not a single program change,
volume or pan command unless I tell it to.
* No stupid routing. MIDI from a midi keyboard should always go to
the destenation of the selected track (midi thru like software
sequencers), also when an external port is selected. At least there
should be a way to configure the MIDI sequencer to do so.

I don't care about internal sounds, a pure MIDI sequencer would do
fine. But I would also like a larger display than the XL-7. And if
possible, a non-pattern based sequencer.

Please help me anyone.

My best advice is this. Get the yamaha QY7000.
It as I understand it works like a computer sequencer. It don't
work in patterns and it had a huge display. And not that i have
been looking for it but I have never heard of a bug problem with it.

Also it's internal sounds are probibly very stale but it is not what
it is trying to do.

Peace and good luck.

Niffas,

If you are looking for a hardware sequencer Yamaha has
several good ones. I have listed links to details
about two of them below. There is also the the RS7000
but that Sequencer/Sampler cost more than your XL-7. I
hope this helps.

Man, you make me sad. And worst of all: i agree with you. Now i start to re=
alise, that i wasted my money and time to this nice box. All that i wanted w=
as an exact hardware sequencer to change my computer-based composing style. =
What i get is an unstable half-baked workstation with expensive sound-expand=
ing options (if you like to use your own sounds). At the moment i use it for=
 midi-controller (the knobs are great)!
How can i trust in an equipment which FREEZES at times?! It just can't ste=
p smoothly between patterns even with the latest OS upgrade?! It's impossibl=
e to syncronize it exactly to my computer-system, the bank- and program-chan=
ge messages are WEIRD and the best of all: it sends exlusive messages to my =
E-MU Ultra sampler, even if i turn off the incoming programchanges on it (ch=
anges the volumes, pans and bus assignments in my multisetups)!!!
I'm an E-MU user long ago, and i was happy when i saw the first pictures of=
the XL-7. I did'nt thought that those guys are out of practice of sequencer=
-building.
I'm affraid, that E-MU won't sell many of these models, and soon will get o=
ut of developping the OS.

Anyway, i've heard, that AKAI will release a super-highend MPC (4000) soon.=

I hear good things about the Kawai Q-80exe.
It is like a beefed up MMT-8 with 32 tracks and disk drive.
Not the pattern based sequencer that I am searching for however...
