automation weirdness since i installed a new rom

automation weirdness since i installed a new rom

2004-07-21 by zone_ahead

i just bought and installed the xl-7 rom into my px-7 a few days
ago. at first i just thought it was user error, but i noticed that
now sometimes (and only sometimes) that when i record automation, it
will record it to the wrong midi channel.

like recently, i was trying to do a volume fade for channel 6 and as
i was recording it, channel 6 faded as it should, but upon playback
channel 2 actually had the volume fade on it.

i can't reproduce it every time but it's happened multiple times
since installing the new rom.

so far i haven't noticed any other weird behaviour

i've only had my command station for a little while and i'm still
learning my way around the menus. i'm thinking that maybe i need to
change something to the presets from the xl7 rom for the midi
channel, but it's not popping out at me when i go through the menus

anyone have any ideas?

thanks.

holy shit. something is definitely the matter with my px-7. i went
to save a pattern and when i hit "save" and the px-7 froze on the
save screen for a couple minutes.

I turned off the px-7 and restarted it.....all of my patterns (and
the demo patterns) have been erased....??????

do i need to remove the xl-7 rom?

Wow, that definitely doesn't sound good! I would open the unit back up
and make sure that everything is secure, check all cables and ROMs to be
sure they are securely fastened to the circuit boards. Maybe try moving
the new ROM to a different slot. When you put it back together, make sure
the case screws are firmly fastened.

If you still have problem, might be a defective unit and should be sent
back to Emu asap.

Well if all this has started since you installed the new rom it would
point to that being the problem..
Like rEalm said, check all the roms are seated correctly and fully
home. (I think the other person on here that put the rom in the
socket the WRONG way round was very lucky if either the command
station or the ROM survied)
Sounds like all your seq/Patch data has been corrupted now so maybe a
reset of the unit would be in order.
I would remove the new rom, power up the PX-7 and see if things
returned back to normal. If your in a situation that your data is
still gone, i would do a system reset as its highly possible that you
will get more errors from this point on.
If things improve, try the rom again.
Ive just put a protean rom in mine which seemed all to easy with no
problems (that ive noticed..im a very new user as well)
I didnt have to reset or anything.
Also watch the static! ALWAYS ground yourself before handing the ROM
as this can damage it (and the command station..)
See if that helps..
Good luck

thanks for the reply eric. will see what i can do tonight. i've
had the px-7 for about two months and it hasn't given me any
problems until i installed the xl1 rom.

some more information:

when it froze up on the save screen, i let it go for about 5 minutes
before i turned it off.

when i turned it back on i received a message stating that there was
an error and something about needing to restore.

after this is when all of the patterns (user and demo)/presets (only
user) were erased. all of the roms still appear in the menu and
everything appears to be working as it should, sans the missing data.

thanks gonz. i wondered about the grounding issue, but thought i
had it covered. i really hope that's not the case, or if it is,
only the rom is damaged and not the command station.....*crossing

yeah, i ran diagnostics.... all the tests passed. i went ahead and
and did the full reinitialization since all my patterns and user
presets had been erased anyways.

i didn't get a chance to open up the case tonight. i'll have a play
around with that tomorrow.

thanks again everyone.

Could've been some static discharge that pissed it off, who knows. If
all the tests passed, I wouldn't worry about it doing it again.

Yeah, it has a pretty wonky design where it wants to reinitialize the
whole unit if there's flash corruption instead of trying to recover
from it. C'est la vie.

thanks for chiming in aaron. i opened up the case tonight just to
have a look around and from my novice eyes, nothing seemed out of
place as far as seating of the roms, etc...

i've been putting the px-7 through the paces tonight with a couple
test patterns with quite a bit of automation and so far, so good.

OK, I'm back. After a few days of everything being good, i am
starting to encounter automation troubles again. Same thing as
before with the automation being recorded to the wrong channel.
Again it's with a channel i'm trying to do a volume fade on showing
up on the wrong channel.

This time it was for what should be on channel 9 and it's going to
channel 10. After this happened, I tried some other automation on
this channel 9 and all of it shows up on channel 10.

In that example (channel 10 data where you expect channel 9 datat):

(1) what controller are you using to send the volume info?
(2) what channel is it being sent on?
(3) what track are you sending it to?
(4) what is your rechannelize setting?

Just a quick question, are you sure you're not getting your tracks and
midi channels confused? Since a track can be assigned any midi channel, I
could see someone accidentally changing the midi channel for a track, when
they thought they were changing the track number. Just an idea...

Re: automation weirdness since i installed a new rom

Hi Steve.

(1) I'm using the px-7's controller knobs - knob 9(I) specifically.
Right now since my problems I don't have any other controllers
hooked up to it.

(2)&(3)&(4) According to Channel assign Track 9 is assigned to MIDI
channel 9A. Similarly Track 10 is assigned to channel 10A. But the
data is going to track 10 from channel 9.

Thanks.

Hi Eric. I thought maybe it was same thing at first when I
originally asked my question last week, but as I mentioned in my
reply to Steve above, in channel assign all 16 tracks are assigned
to the corresponding number MIDI channel. So Channel 9A is going to
track 9, and so forth.

2004-07-29 by zone_ahead

OK. Potential breakthrough here - maybe. I just tried recording
automation again on this same track 9 and this time it was sent to
channel 1 on track 1.

Last night it went to channel 10, track 10.

This got me thinking and I looked at the pattern view, and I
actually had channel 1/track 1 selected. So I scrolled to channel 9
and did the volume fade again and sure enough, it recorded to
channel 9/track 9.

So I guess my question is: If I'm in volume edit mode and even if
I'm using the 9(I) controller to change volume and I'm hearing track
9's volume change while I am actually recording, will it go to
whatever channel is selected in pattern mode?

If this is the case, then is it possible to record volume automation
for multiple channels in one take?

I'm just confused that I haven't encountered this before.

Either way, I think I have a work-around for now.

Again, I appreciate your guys' help. You have definitely steered me
in the right direction.

Ok, I just had to check, a few people missed that when the XX-7's first
came out. So this is something you can reproduce everytime then?

Hi Eric. I thought maybe it was same thing at first when I
originally asked my question last week, but as I mentioned in my
reply to Steve above, in channel assign all 16 tracks are assigned
to the corresponding number MIDI channel. So Channel 9A is going to
track 9, and so forth.

Ah ha! I knew it :) Maybe try turning Rechannelize off?

Not sure where you are with this? Is it resolved?

If its still a problem, what have you ruled out?
(1) rechannelize issue
(2) track v. channel issue

Since you are using the knobs, maybe its the knob settings. What
mode are you using when the problem occurs? quick edit? programmable?
volume?

By any chance did you change your setup when you installed the new
rom? (restored old an old multisetup? made changes and saved a new
multisetup?

Hope this gets you closer to getting the volume fades working right.

You can only record on one track at a time on the XL-7. You can
control and record multiple channels of data at once, but only into one
track.

It will help you to become familiar with the differences between
channels and tracks. I know it's a bit esoteric, but it will help you
in the end. Tracks go to channels. You record into one track at a
time. You can put as many volume commands for different channels into
one track, but they will go to whatever channel(s) the track is routed
to.

Yes. Make a MultiA track and record your automation into that. If you
want to then put that data back into your tracks, copy the MultiA track
to the clipboard and then use the Explode Clipboard To Tracks command.
You can then erase the MultiA track. Note that this will only work if
you have your tracks and channels numbered the same.

OK. Very cool. Thank you for the clarification. I'm actually
pretty glad I ran into this snag. It's help me delve into some
functions of the command station i haven't explored yet.

Thanks again all.
