Software sequencer question

Software sequencer question

2004-07-23 by mike

Now that I have a new Mac G4 Powerbook, I'm looking for sequencer software to use while
I'm traveling. I'd like to create on the road, then dump everything into the E-mu for
further tweaking. I'd also like the capability to use .wav files and be able to edit those.

Any suggestions? I'd like to keep the cost under $150 (if that's possible!) Also, the
software has to be OSx-friendly. I've done some searching, but nothing solid so far. Also,
The Garageband and iDrum apps are fun, but don't meet my needs.

Thanks in advance,
Mike

Thanks for the suggestion. I checked the website and it looks great! Only problem is- it's
not compatible with Mac OS. I'll have to keep searching, I guess.

Do you use OS 9 or OSX?

If you use OSX, i would suggest Numerology.
http://www.five12.com/numerology.html
You can use it to trigger AU synths on the road, or use your emu
as the sound source at home.

Thanks, I'll take a look anyway. I know I'm being cheap, but something like Reason (or
similar) does too much for what I need right now. Numerology looks promising, and it's
only $80. I need to be able to sequence using a mouse. My briefcase is too small for any
midi keyboard. (not to mention the tray tables on the airplanes)

I know I did look at Muzy's, but I don't remember what I didn't like about it. I'll have to
take a look again.

Thanks again for the reply!!

An excellent suggestion!! Unfortunately, it's only Windows based. I'll look for something
similar for Mac OS-X.

Thanks again,
Mike

I seem to remember hating the interface of Muzys. Numerology is very
cool, particularly as a creative compositional tool; it's not a
traditional sequencer (*cough* digital tape deck *cough*), which I
consider a good thing; YMMV.

Re: Software sequencer question

I did spend some time working with Numerology and thought that the sequencer was a bit
clumsy for note selection. There wasn't any order to the key selection menu.

I noticed Cubase SE is on sale. Since I can't find any demos on the web, I'll have to try
Guitar Center and see if they'll let me check it out. I know it's a dumbed-down version of
the regular Cubase program, but I'm only interested in the sequencer and midi
capability anyway.

Thanks again!

Yes, it's modeled on the old analog sequencer modules (or newer ones
made by the likes of Doepher, etc.), so you might not like those
either. Some users pushed for a MIDI In module so they could input
notes from keyboard controllers in a more familiar manner.

The nice thing about Numerology is that its developer, Jim Coker, is
receptive to new ideas.
