Sad MIDI connection question.

Sad MIDI connection question.

2002-01-24 by brechin01356

I knew this would happen. I try to take the first tentative steps to
downloading the new OS and I can't even establish a midi
connection. What on earth do I have to do to get the E-Loader device
configuration boxes to say XL-7? Ps I hate computers and they all
know who I am.
                    Thanks Bryan

What kind of computer are you using and what version of OS is it running?

Have you read through the Installation Instructions and the QuickStart
guide?

Ok, I'm not the person who asked the original question,
however, I have having a similar problem. I tried numerous
different ways of getting the MIDI interface to connect
properly from my Proteus 2500(which is the basically the
same as the MP7 and the XL7 without the keypad), and I
haven't had any success with the E-Loader either, sucks
too because supposedly with the 2500 I can load all of
the factory preset songs and patterns for both the XL7
and the MP7 via the E-Loader.

I'm using Windows 2000 ServPak2, with a Creative Labs
AWE64 Sound Card. I loaded the Microsoft Java Runtime
Engine and that didn't seem to work. Haven't tried the
Sun version thats on the CD yet, which is a recommended
alternative in the FAQ's posted in files in this users
group. I'm going to try that next. But, any other
suggestions would be helpful.

Thanks,

jp

jp,

Without the ROM's from the XL-7(X-LEAD#9089)and the MP-7(Pure
Phatt#9062)in your 2500, the sounds you are trying to download will
NOT work. The presets are directed to pull information from the ROM
itself.

Can you describe a bit more about what doesn't work? You just say you
can't get it to connect properly.

Does E-Loader launch correctly? [testing installation]

Do your sound card's MIDI ports show up in the MIDI Configuration lists?
What are they called? (Input and Output). [testing MIDI drivers]

If you choose 'Show Available MIDI Devices' in the MIDI menu, does the
XL-7 show up in the list? [testing for bi-directional MIDI connection]

If you open the MIDITracker window and then play the keypad on the XL-7
do you see activity in the window? [testing for input connection]

If you click with your mouse on the MIDITracker channel strips does it
play your XL-7? [testing for output connection]

Thanks M2 for the reply, claiming ignorance here, I'll take your;input as more credible than
the place I bought the Proteus 2500 from. I've been out of the recording hobby for some
time and I just bought the Proteus 2500 as an alternative to the XL7, which is what I really
wanted. It makes sense that the sounds won't be the same unless the ROM is also available
in the 2500. What the CD does have are all of the song and pattern files (the .MID files) for
the MP7 and the XL7, but thats all.
Based on your opinion, do you think there's any advantage the 2500 has over the XL7 or
MP7? The reason I ask is because I've considered returning the 2500 in exchange for
a XL7 after doing some more research and after reading your reply.
Your opinion would be helpful,
Thanks,

jp,

Glad to help.

The units are identical less the ribbon and drum pads on the 2500,
oh, and sound set of course. You had mentioned that you really
wanted the XL-7. Why did you go with the 2500 instead? As far as
advantages, it really depends on the music you like. I like all
styles so it's really up to you. Do you have a good keyboard
controller? If you do then I'd say use the expansion slots(you have
3 open)and get the X-LEAD ROM # 9089 and use your controller keys.
The 2500 is nice but my only gripe is that I wish it had more than
the 3 extra expansion slots. Right now I have this E-MU gear:

P2K w/Techno Synth Construction Yard & Beat Garden ROM's by Rob Papen
(giving me the standard Proteus and Orbit 3 in one module)

XL-1 standard w/Pure Phatt ROM
(giving me the XL-1 and Mo'Phatt in one module)

Launch Pad midi controller

If the 2500 had six slots, I would sell these and put everything in
one and gain the sequencer(right now I use a hardware sequencer).

Let me know what you decide to do and if there is anything else we
can do to help. You can e-mail me privately.

RE: [xl7] Re: Sad MIDI connection question.

2002-01-28 by Panzare

M2,
Thanks for theadvice and help,
To answer your question, I wasn't sure if I wanted to go strickly with the sounds the XL7 has
and since the techs that sold me the unit misinformed me, I thought I could upload the XL7
and MP7 patterns into the 2500. I figured that wasn't the case but I can exchange it for an
XL7 if I don't like the 2500. And your right, the 2500 is more of a all around system rather
than being strickly for Hip-hop or techno like the MP7 and the XL7. I'll let you know if I
exchange it for the XL7, I compose all kinds of music but my preference is trance and
techno...thats why I was leaning towards the XL7. As far as the equipment I have to
supplement the 2500, I just bought an Alesis QS7.1 keyboard to go along with the 2500,
plusI already had a Korg M1 to use as my controller for the 2500. I got a great deal on
a Boss BR-8 last month and thats what I'm using for recording.
Thanks again for the help and hopefully we can help each other in the future. I may...thats
a very big may...be able to help you out with some awesome software my cousin has, if
I can persuade him into letting me have a copy of it. Over 2GB's of the most awesome
sounds and riffs of every kind of instrument you can think of, plus the software to load all
of the sounds and riffs and blend them with recorded tracks created from any external
MIDI device. I'll find out more about the software later this week. Let me know
if your interested. Like I said though, I have to talk him into getting me a copy of it, he's
in the recording business in LA, I live in Boston so getting it will take a little time to get
it assuming I can talk him into it.
Thanks again,
jp-

jp,

If trance is your thing, take it back and get the XL. You can always
expand the XL later but for now, use the sounds from your M1 for the
basics because I still use mine. Smack the salesman in the head too,
after you exchange it though :-}

jp,

If trance is your thing, take it back and get the XL. You can always
expand the XL later but for now, use the sounds from your M1 for the
basics because I still use mine. Smack the salesman in the head too,
after you exchange it though :-}

RE: [xl7] Re: Sad MIDI connection question.

M2,
Another question, this time about sound cards. I need to find a different sound card than
the AWE64 I'm using right now...it's a royal pain in the butt to configure with external
MIDI devices. I'm looking at the Delta 410, or the Audiophile 2496 or the new Sound
Blaster Extigy which is an external module that can be connected to a standard laptop
or PC via a USB interface. It's got built-in MIDI-IN/OUT connectors, SPDIF In/Out plus
alot more. Itsabout the same price as theAudiophile 410 and 2496. Have you heard
anything about any of these cards? Good or Bad?
Thanks,
jp

Re: Sad MIDI connection question.

jp,

Someone else is going to have to take this one. You see, I just have
the Midiman Winman 2x2 midi interface that I strictly use for
downloading presets only. My new computer has the Creative/E-MU
Soundblaster Live card but since I use a hardware sequencer, I won't
have the answer's you need.

Sorry,

M2

USB = Shitty Sound

I've had tons of trouble using a usb sound card (roland u-8). I'm borrowing a pcmcia layla to do a mixdown at the moment. because the u8 drops midi sync constantly..
I don't believe there is enouph throughput to use midi and full duplex sound.

Re: Sad MIDI connection question.

2002-01-29 by ezra_gold

I too have have had a lot of trouble with USB MIDI interfaces. When I
set up my current computer (Athalon 750) I got a MidiSport 4x4 usb
interface. I could not get the audio and the MIDI to sync. I thought
is was the soundcard for a long time. After hearing about other folks
with the same problem I picked up a parallel port interface and things
have been much better.

I think the problem is that win98 (and possibly others) dont handle
the USB ports in a timing sensitive way. I am under the impression
that things are better with later versions of windows, sequencers,
drivers and what-not but I am set up for the moment. Heck, it only
took me 10 years to upgrade from my last system.
