general thoughts _ + a new mp3

Hey,

Sorry to hear that Realm decided to leave his PX7 home when
gigging. I am in the same boat - How would I recreate
complicated sequences reliably live? For me a laptop is not the
answer. Don't get me wrong, Ableton is bad ass and I have
used it to 'organize' some of my best songs, BUT I wouldn't show
up at a gig w/ it.

It is all a matter of what you do. I can program beats, but in
reality I am a musician and I like to perform. I use my glorified
launch pad of an MP7 as an old skool sound module and
perform the pads for main parts live . That works for me and
gives people the opportunity to see me perform something.

Back to the original question... How would I recreate shit live?
I've started beat matching my own stuff w/ the Numark CDX to my
mpc + mp7. Midi synced Eye candy w/ chick appeal ;)

Emu samplers are so cheap on ebay. Why spend $200 for the
world rom when you can get a sampler - load your own sounds
AND have z-plane filters? That's just me.

Emu. I love my Emu stuff, just sad they got bought out by
soundblaster. ;( The end is near.

blah blah blah...

>>>Trust me, it was a VERY hard decision to make, and not one I made
lightly. <<<

>>>For me, this was only partly the issue that led me to try the laptop
route. Basically, I had spent months prepping a new live set using the
PX-7, and when I recorded a demo and sent it out to promoters and friends,
I got the same response "It's good, but nowhere near as good as your
studio tracks". I don't think it was neccesarily the material that was
bad, it just wasn't as punchy and full sounding as my normal tunes due to
lack of dynamics processing. So I began to look into getting a sampler to
augment it, and a dynamics processor. Eventually I began to realize that
for the money I was about to spend on those, I could a laptop and a Indigo
soundcard.

In the past my live sets have always been totally new tracks and not live
performances of my studio tunes. This setup lets me take my studio tacks
on the road, so at least I can get some use out of the songs that I really
liked, but could never get signed. Had my first gig in MInneapolis last
weekend with the new set up, and it went over extremely well, probably the
best gig of my life. I'm hooked now. :)

>>>I hear you, it is a vastly different way of working, and I'm still
working out how I want to control everything. I'm currently using a Korg
MicroKontrol, but not sure it's the best choice for live use. It's very
important to me to not be clicking with a mouse the whole set.

Anyway, the PX-7 will still get plenty of use, and I'm glad I'm starting
with a clean pallette now. My current plan is to use it as a loop and
sound design tool. Basically each pattern w/effects will be dedicated to
a single custom Preset, so instead of using Patterns as mini songs, I'll
have a collection of hooks and loops to use as I see fit later on in my
studio tracks. I'd never sell the PX-7 though, if for no other reason
than I'm hooked on the World ROM! <<<
