Midi Patch Change

2004-05-21 by ufound12

Hi All,
Before my question, I would like to say thanks to all that post
great information to this group. It is the reason I decided to buy
my PX-7 (and extra roms!).
I am trying to use internal midi channels along with the same
channels on external modules. It seems that I can only change
patches and use the volume knobs on one or the other, which doesnt
make sense. I hope I am overlooking something.
Thanks, Joe

Set the destination to BOTH in the Pattern Edit menu for the tracks you
want to do this with.

The destination is set to BOTH. The problem is I only get notes and
not the program changes. I am using song mode, but the same happens
in track mode.

I am just starting to tackle the sequencer, so someone with more
experience please correct me or please confirm. I thought I read
somewhere that the E-Mu sequncer doesn't send out patch change
commands externally when the destination is set to both.

Again, I am not sure of this.

Steve,

I read that and agree 100%. That design idea baffles me. That is why
I posted my message to the experts here in the group. I am hoping to
get some brilliant work around for it.

Re: Midi Patch Change

need to make sure i am understanding you right. You are trying to
take lets say sequencer track 9 and use it on midi channel 9. It is
set to BOTH and you are not getting program changes in external
gear. Is that right?

Ya I can't make that work. I just thought I would try a few things
as I just took a few min out and did but ya it seems that you cant
send program changes to both internal and external gear off the same
channel at the same time.

Sorry I could not be of more help

Mike

Re: [xl7] Re: Midi Patch Change

2004-05-22 by Aaron Eppolito

Steve is correct. When a track is set to "both", program changes on
the track will only be sent internally. This is because, in a standard
MIDI file, there's no notion of "port" so you couldn't have one PC for
the internal synth and one PC for the external device. Since you can't
have separate ones, and it wouldn't be useful to send the *same*
program change internally as externally, we only send internal.

What you *can* do, however, is set up an "ext" "MultiA" (or B) track
and place *all* your external program changes on it. This is also why
"both" tracks don't send externally, because otherwise, you wouldn't be
able to use this workaround.

Re: Midi Patch Change

2004-05-22 by steve_the_composer

Thanks for the confirmation. I found the passsage in the manual
earlier. That's one of the "workarounds" I thought of, too: a single
control track with up to 16 channels of patch changes or other data
[pan, volume, other CC, etc.] specifically for the external gear.
Using both MultiA and MultiB and two sequencer tracks, you should be
able to set up controls for up to 32 external channels. To me, this
is a nice feature, not just a workaround.

Another option is to double the track and make it ext. However, this
wastes a track and memory.

I love this--best reason to not have something!!!!!

LOL. Heh: "the reason the feature's not in there is because it would
preclude the workaround for the feature not being in there..."

Re: Midi Patch Change

2004-05-24 by ufound12

OK I almost got it. I understand the theory of the no patch change.
I have only been using e-loader to send *songs* to the PX-7. I dont
think I am even using the *patterns*. can I attach a pattern to one
of my songs for program changes? and will it cause it to keep
sending the patch change out every 32 bars (the max length for
patterns)? I also experimented and set the song to external and
plugged the midi out back to the midi in, and I can use all the
knobs for internal sounds.
