PX-7 forgetful Channel assignments...maybe a bug?

PX-7 forgetful Channel assignments...maybe a bug?

2004-03-17 by Alan Wrightson

Does anyone else using the xx7 to control both an external synth
(p2k) and using internal sounds on the same pattern have this
problem?: Channel assignments are beforehand allegedly saved along
with the Pattern. So how come when I switch to song mode to listen to
what I've done, then go back into pattern mode, the channel
reassignments have all defaulted back to "int". This is driving me
crazy...I've saved the pattern when it's all set up OK but as soon as
I play the song and go back again...even changing pattern and
reloading it to refresh ther pattern data, the channel assignments
are all reverted back to "int" instead of a smattering of "int"
and "ext" as I had saved.

My midi merge is both off, rechannelize is on, the damn thing just
refuses to remember it's ext assignments.

I have 3 px7's and all of them are doing this to me. At first I
thought it was not saving my multisetup, but I have tried it with and
without doing this (according to the manual channel assignments
aren't stored in a multisetup anyway) and neither made any difference.

I've had to ditch using my TR rack and transfer all my p2k roms into
my spare px7 and run them all in tandem using start/stop because of
this....a real pain when there's not much room.

Any ideas?

PS is there a way of using eloader to upload / download sysex data -
the midi log thing seems close but has no download.

Out of curiosity, what do you use 3 PX-7's for? I'll look into your issue
tonight when I get home too.

I use MIDI Ox for sysex transfers, and really enjoy using it.

Re: PX-7 forgetful Channel assignments...maybe a bug? + metronome sound

2004-03-18 by Alan Wrightson

thanks for replying

Well originally it was going to be 2 px7s one for orchestral, one for
dance, but they are so cheap at the moment in the uk and looks like
this will be the last chance to buy them...and then I went ROM crazy,
filled up all but 1 of the 12 slots. the third was intended as a
backup and I was using the p2k for those occasional roms...but the
bug/issue has scuppered that idea, so now I need all 3 to have all
the sounds available.

It's the latest OS version by the way

one more thing - I've got one of them loaded up with the 3 orchestra
boards and the world ROM - but now I can't get a metronome sound at
all! You'd think there was some way to select the metronome sound
from the roms available but I've been searching and no
bananas...unless someone can help??

cheers

Alan

Re: PX-7 forgetful Channel assignments...maybe a bug?

2004-03-18 by robotchas

This happened to me, and it was pretty infuriating at the time. As
best as I can make out, whenever the XX-7 gets to the "END" step in
song mode, it reverts all channel assigns to "INT". The only way to
fix it is to either revert to saved (either in song or pattern mode)
or load a new song. When you're jumping back and forth between song
and pattern mode (say, because you're recording or working out a song
in your rehearsal space, ahem) it can be a real pain in the ass to
have to keep doing this. Another option is to make a "false ending"
to the song, by muting all the tracks and making the length of the
muted step really long. While this avoids the "END" step, you also
lose the ability to see in the display that the end of the song is
coming up.

So yes, I regard this as a bug, since there doesn't seem to be
any "feature" advantage to this behavior - the *correct* thing to do
is to simply leave the track assigns as-is. There is a workaround
which is a relatively minor annoyance once you know about it, but if
there's ever an OS update it would be nice if this were fixed.

On a side note, I locked up my OS2.0 XL-7 the other day. Basically,
once you save an edited pattern to a new location, make sure you
switch to that new pattern location (to clear the pattern edit
buffer, which still contains the old pattern number) before you start
using XMIX...

Re: PX-7 forgetful Channel assignments...maybe a bug?

2004-03-19 by Alan Wrightson

thanks for the workaround...very clever! Maybe I won't ditch the
external racks after all. It does seem stupid, having a hardware
sequencer that forgets its assignments at the end of every song.

As to whether they'll fix it in the next release I guess it's just a
question of whether there will actually be one... :(

But if there is...EMU PLEASE TAKE NOTE OF THIS BUG!!!

incidentally, where in the uk did you get the roms from and what were

There is no way to select the Mtronome sound manually. That sucks you

Re: PX-7 forgetful Channel assignments...maybe a bug? + metronome sound

2004-03-19 by Alan Wrightson

uk rom prices aren't great at the moment, as well as half of them
being unavailable now. www.digitalvillage.co.uk and www.turnkey.co.uk
were the two most reliable suppliers I used. Don't buy online though,
contact them over the phone, they are doing some pretty good
discounts (turnkey quoted me £169 for one board - can't remember
which, but when I asked for a deal they went straight down to £139).
Digital village quoted me £125 each for orch 1 & 2 bundled together,
while on the website they're much higher. If you can find anyone in
the uk/world who will ship a sounds of the zr,enqoniq project or pure
phatt to the UK then email me, because I've had no joy whatsoever. I
got turnkey's last world expedition and no-one else does those
anymore either.

Rom pricing: protozoa seems to be £99 everywhere, techno is around
£130 but xlead 2 is quite pricey - I had to settle for 169, and they
wouldn't even budge when bundling it with one of my px-7s.

Bargain wise turnkey are now doing the px-7 at £329. If you flog off
the drum rom for a ton on ebay, that means you get a hardware
sequencer and bare proteus synth for just over £200, which is pretty
good going.

nonexistent metronome

2004-03-19 by Alan Wrightson

Damn...looks like I'm going to have to put my xlead rom into my
orchestra px-7. Should lead to some interesting combinations!

It looks like the only roms which have the metronome sound embedded
then are the pure phatt, x lead and protean drums. I presume proteus
pop does as well because it ships with the p2.5k which has the
sequencer on board but I haven't checked. I know composer doesn't
have an metronome sound either.

Actually if you sell the ROM, you won't have any synth facilities. Unless
you replaced it with another ROM of course (but who would want to lose the
Protean Drum ROM?).

Re: [xl7] Re: PX-7 forgetful Channel assignments...maybe a bug? + metronome sound

2004-03-19 by Aaron Eppolito

Yes we did. I can't remember which preset it uses, but if you take all
the stock ROMs out, it uses one of the user presets. I think it's the
second to last (i.e. 126'3). Maybe it's the last one. I don't
remember.

Yeah, I also wish there was a way to "revert to saved" without
stopping the sequencer, but I guess the memory managment precludes
that...

Reclaimed Metronome!

2004-03-20 by Alan Wrightson

Aaron you complete star...I saved an orchestral bongo to user 126
bank 3 and it works a treat as a metronome. Many, many thanks for
this, it's going to save me a lot of rom hot swapping!!!!
