I'm a beginner at best when it comes to editing presets. Is there an easy way to add a sweep effect to a preset or an instrument? The one I was interested is in xl-7 bank 3 #57 bpm:bubbler.

Check out the Manual pages 170 through 174. The way to ad sweep effects, usually means having a moving filter. If you can recreate the sweep by manually raising the FilterQ (second knob from the top left) and then sweeping the filter (top left knob), then all you need to do is automate that movement. That is what the Filter Envelope is for. The panel has the Filter Attack and Decay knobs (the Sustain and Release is in the patch and you have to use the screen to tweak those) with which you use to set the speed of an upward sweep (attack) or downward sweep (decay), but they won't do anything unless you go into the patch and adust the Filter Envelope amount to something higher. This makes the Filter Attack and Filter Decay take control of the Filter Cutoff (as if it were tweaking the knob instead of you). The way it works is that if you put Filter Envelope Amount to full and put the Filter Cutoff to Zero, then the Envelope sweeps the filter from zero to full based on the settings of the Attack Decay Sustain and Release of the Envelope. You may not want to start the filter at zero (no sound) so set the cutoff to the place you want the sound to sound like at the beggining (or end) of the sweep. Then adjust the Envelope amount to taste as well, setting full makes the filter go to full and it may stay there for a while if the attack is still taking its time trying to push it up further than it can go (this happens if env amount is full but filter cutoff is more than zero). If you want a sweep that only goes so far, then bring the value of Envelope Amount down. Once you have the timing and scope of the envelope the way you want it, then tweak the filter cutoff and filter q knobs to get the sound of the sweep you want. Use the Filter Decay and Attack to tweak the timing more as well. Then save your new sound into a user preset.

Check out the Manual pages 170 through 174.
The way to ad sweep effects, usually means having a moving filter. If
you can recreate the sweep by manually raising the FilterQ (second knob

all you need to do is automate that movement. That is what the Filter

you go into the patch and adust the Filter Envelope amount to something
higher. This makes the Filter Attack and Filter Decay take control of
the Filter Cutoff (as if it were tweaking the knob instead of you). The
way it works is that if you put Filter Envelope Amount to full and put
the Filter Cutoff to Zero, then the Envelope sweeps the filter from zero
to full based on the settings of the Attack Decay Sustain and Release of
the Envelope. You may not want to start the filter at zero (no sound) so
set the cutoff to the place you want the sound to sound like at the
beggining (or end) of the sweep. Then adjust the Envelope amount to
taste as well, setting full makes the filter go to full and it may stay
there for a while if the attack is still taking its time trying to push
it up further than it can go (this happens if env amount is full but

You might want to take a look at: http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/xl7/message/11104 The steps were designed to be simple and to propell experimentation and creativity. I used arp:A Trip to demo the slow wah [sweep] effect. The same deconstruction/reconstruction method works with bpm:bubbler. On bpm.bubbler, note the use of the pat:Neener for LFO2 SHAPE!! Hope this helps. --Dr. Steve

[snip] yes!!! excellent suggestions. more ways to do cool filter effects!!! G-d Bless Bob Moog for the vision and E-Mu for the contemporary (albeit now legacy) implementation. I am soooooo glad knobs came back!

Thanks Steve for your input. I did not know you could actually record the quick edit movements into the track of a pattern. Like Ravi said, you move the filter cut-off knob to get the speed and depth of the sweep. Jody
