Losing INT/EXT track settings

Losing INT/EXT track settings

2004-02-02 by Justin Grimley

I've just started using the XL7 to control my other gear. However,
when I set a track to be external, the setting doesn't stick. I am
using Pattern Edit, then routing each channel 09A - 016 to external.
However, the settings continually get reset to internal. It seems
that when I change an earlier channel to internal for example (01A -
INT) than all subsequent channels/tracks get set to internal.
Anyone any ideas?
Thanks,
grimley

You have to have some type of data on the track for it to remember it's
settings. Do you have midi data on those tracks?

rEalm,
Thanks for the reply. No, I don't have any data on the tracks. I
was just trying to create a template that I can use with Cubase. Is
there anything I could put in the tracks that would fool the XL7 but
wouldn't be of any significance audio-wise.
Thanks,
grimley

What do you mean so you can control Cubase? As in it's track faders, or
onscreen synths? I would just create a Multisetup with the appropriate
channel and CC's assigned to each knob in Program Mode, might be
easier....

Re: Losing INT/EXT track settings

2004-02-02 by Justin Grimley

Sorry, I should have explained better ...
In Cubase I have a template with 12 midi tracks which map to tracks 5-
16 from the XL-7. I am using the input transformer on the tracks in
Cubase so that they filter out channels not assigned for this track.
For example:
In cubase:
Midi Track 1  -> Halion channel 1   <- From XL-7 channel 5
Midi Track 2  -> Halion channel 2   <- From XL-7 channel 6
Midi Track 3  -> Halion channel 3   <- From XL-7 channel 7
Midi Track 4  -> Halion channel 4   <- From XL-7 channel 8
Midi Track 5  -> Virusb channel 1   <- From XL-7 channel 9
Midi Track 6  -> Virusb channel 2   <- From XL-7 channel 10
Midi Track 7  -> Virusb channel 3   <- From XL-7 channel 11
Midi Track 8  -> Virusb channel 4   <- From XL-7 channel 12
Midi Track 9  -> MS2000r channel 1  <- From XL-7 channel 13
Midi Track 10 -> MS2000r channel 2  <- From XL-7 channel 14
Midi Track 11 -> Juno 106 channel 1 <- From XL-7 channel 15
Midi Track 12 -> Absynth2 channel 1 <- From XL-7 channel 16

This is my scratch-pad template that also involves using Ableton Live
rewired to Cubase. This way I can use the XL-7 in the same manner I
use Ableton Live, for example, quickly trying out different
combinations of both audio(Ableton Live) and midi(XL-7)loops, using
the mute buttons on the XL-7 and keyboard maps for Live.

Re: [xl7] Re: Losing INT/EXT track settings

Nice use of the input transformers! I think that the best thing to do,
would be to just insert a bogus message CC into the blank tracks in the
XL-7. Maybe insert a Pan Command that set the panning to center (unless
you use panning a lot), or something else that's esoteric.

Midi Track 4  -> Halion channel 4   <- From XL-7 channel 8
Midi Track 5  -> Virusb channel 1   <- From XL-7 channel 9
Midi Track 6  -> Virusb channel 2   <- From XL-7 channel 10
Midi Track 7  -> Virusb channel 3   <- From XL-7 channel 11
Midi Track 8  -> Virusb channel 4   <- From XL-7 channel 12
Midi Track 9  -> MS2000r channel 1  <- From XL-7 channel 13
Midi Track 10 -> MS2000r channel 2  <- From XL-7 channel 14

Re: Losing INT/EXT track settings

Just FYI...
I think CC#11 is still "Expression". It is probably a great choice
for a task like this. On older synths it simply replicated the same
function as CC#7 - "Volume" by default. No need for duplicate
controllers, so it's a good candidate if that assumption is still
true.

Not sure of it's default use on the xx-7s.

Thanks critten and rEalm .. I'll give this a try when I get home.
Now, I'm going to have to quit the habit of hitting Erase & Track
button (it will delete my dummy data too) ... that is a great
shortcut.

Re: Losing INT/EXT track settings

2004-02-03 by Justin Grimley

Well I finally figured it all out!
Controller 11 (Expression) seems to work fine. I have one short
event at the start of each track. The only problem is if I want to
erase a track I have to paste the controller from another "empty"
track.
I did have one problem that just took me several hours to figure out,
and the strange thing is I have had the same problem before but
couldn't remember how to fix it ...
In the grid record mode changing the note via the pads did not change
the note value in the record screen or on the synth itself. It kept
playing c3. Finally figured out I needed to set "Dest:both" in the
channel assign screen in the Pattern edit menu for every track I want
to send to an external synth.

Arpeggiator doesn't loop properly

2004-02-04 by Stu

Hi,

I was messing with the arps and I have a problem...

If I set to mode 'up', extension count '15', and extension interval '1', it
only goes up 14 extensions then repeats i.e. it plays a total of 15 notes
then loops.
If I change extension count to '14', it still only plays a total of 15 notes
before repeating.
Extension count '15' should give me a total of 16 notes but it doesn't.
I checked some other modes and the same happens in 'forward', and in 'down'
it plays 16 the first time round, but only 15 the next time (I didn't check
the rest yet).
