Track muting

2001-12-19 by erik_magrini@Baxter.com

I forgot to add, it's especially furstrating if you turn off the mute
after deleting a track and then record something new to the track. The
track is still muted, so you don't hear what you just played right away if
the pattern is looping.

I agree if you delete a track, it should turn of the mute button.

well... it more frustratin while a liveset in bad club conditions..... led is on and you´re wondering where the sound is.... or other way round....
if there is no data on a track the led should be off... like if you are editing a new pattern...you can only switch the tracks on when there is data on it....
maybe with the next OS?

Hehehe, I had this same thing happen to me last weekend! I had been working on a pattern eral quick before I went to the party, and decided last minute to delete a track. Later on when I was playing, I couldn't figure out why that track wasn't making any sound too :) Oh well, just something we have to live with. As far as improvements for live work go, this one is far down on my list while having finer tempo resolution is #1 right now. Actually I just found out I'm getting a Red Sound Micro Sync for Christmas, after my girlfriend got sick of hearing me complain about that everytime I played out and I had to constantly ride the tempo on the XL-7.

Nice workaround, I forgot about that way. Wouldn't have worked in my
situation (already at the gig, with no computer), but it would definitely
be doable as one of those prep things. Thanx.

I agree this is frustrating, but there is a work-around for this
problem. Using E-Loader, transfer the pattern to a computer and open
it up in a software sequencer. Make sure there is no data in the
track you're trying to delete, and then upload it again to the XL7.
It shouldn't be this inconvenient, but this method does work.

Tracks that are empty should be muted (dark).

Tracks that contain data but are muted should flicker (currently they don't).

The Track Mute function on the XL-7 is extremely rudimentary compared with the competition. There are no subgroups (like the separate drum mutes on the 505), no mute inverse (505), no way to "hold" the current settings into the next pattern (505), no mute memories except the setting stored with the pattern (RM1x), no exclusion groups to cut other tracks off (MC-80), no "all on" or "all off" functions and most surprisingly no solo mode (all of the above)! Luckily these are all features that should be relatively easy to add - the biggest problem is finding ways to assign new features to the physical interface.

If you load up a pattern into a sequencer with some sort of List edit
(other than the one built into the XL/MP-7), you'll see that there's a
bunch of CC info (vloume pan, bank msb, bank lsb, etc) sent at the start
of every measure for all tracks with data on them. Cutting tracks to the
clipboard will remove the note info, but it leaves the other initial CC
messages, and that's why the track mute remains lit even after you erase
the notes. I think even the Erase Events function still leaves some info
on the track too. Just FYI...
