Guitar to MIDI convertors

Guitar to MIDI convertors

2003-09-18 by erik_magrini@Baxter.com

Mainly because you have to set them up to work in one of two modes. One
mode just tracks the regular notes you play, and in most cases works just
fine. The other lets you also bend notes and sends out pitchbend messages,
but it's very fidgety and not as predicable as I would like.
Unfortunately, it's this second mode that interests me the most, as that's
just the way I play (lots of bends and slides). Even after spending a lot
of time setting up the convertor and tweaking it just so, I couldn't play
as naturally as I would like. Instead of opening up possibilities, it
seemed to be restricting me.

It's cool, don't get me wrong, but if I'm going to spend thatamount of
money, I want it to be as seemless as possible. The only option I haven't
tried yet, but have been recommended repeatedly, is the Parker MIDI Fly
guitar. I LOVE Parker guitars, but the MIDI Fly is just soooo expensive,
and I can't justify the cost yet.

Why aren't you happy with the guitar to midi convertors? I've always been
interested in getting one but never got around actually getting one...

Hi,

I've got an Axon AX-100 which I think is great.. plays fine for me... It
glitches a bit, but that's coz my guitar has always been very harmonically
rich which seems to throw the convertor sometimes (old dull strings actually
work better...) Bends and slides play great - no problem there... I got it
set to 24 semitones pitchbend range which seems to work better for me than
12 semitones.

What convertor(s) did you try?

Regards,

Stu

I tried all the Roland's and the Axon as well, plus another one I can't
remember the name of. The Axon was definitely the best, but it was still
giving me the occasional glitch. I just can't spend the money right now
on something that requires me to change my playing style too much. The
Axon was like 90% there in terms of playability for me, so hopefully in
the very near future improvement in the system will make me change my
mind.

If you got 90% then you could probably get 99% with the right guitar pickup
combo... I am quite attached to my guitar so wouldn't dream of getting
another guitar, but there are guitars out there that are specifically
designed for use with guitar-MIDI convertors, such as the Brian Moore's and
the Godins...

Regarding the Parker MIDI fly, apparently they don't cope with hammer-ons
very well... the second note is usually too quiet (oe doesn't sound at all)
and the only practical solution is to not do hammer-ons... Check the
midiguitar group archives for more info...

I dunno how much spare cash you got at the mo, but there's an Axon AX-100
going on eBay for $425 right now, which is dirt cheap considering these
things usually go for between $600-800 or even more... This one includes the
pickup too.

Alternatively, you could try a Yamaha G-50...

Thanks, but this is actually pretty low on my gear priorities right now. I
need a new sampler for live, a UAD-1 card, and a new DJ mixer before I
tackle the guitar. ;)

Roland GR-33 and my Godin Multiac Nylon works extremely well. I
have no complaints, but used to until I got the right guitar. And
yes, you need a UAD-1! They are awesome...
