Emu's Drum offer or used rom? please help me out...

Emu's Drum offer or used rom? please help me out...

2003-09-16 by sincultura13

I was thinking of getting a used rom... maybe the POP or ZR one or
maybe the $99 Protozoa one...Something with nice acoustic sounds. I
just saw that emu has an offer that if you buy one they give you the
Protozoa free. IS it worth it? Or should I just keep looking for a
used rom?

BTW, has anyone here tried the Protozoa acoustic sounds? Mainly
pianos and strings but also organs and elec pianos? Are they any
good? I just bought a car (btw its the XL7's little brother,
used....hehe!)and am on a tight spot... I can't afford to buy
something I'm not going to use.... With $300, I can probably
wait 'til I find a good deal on a used secondhand module, thought it
be nice to have all the sounds inside my XL-7...

Also, has anyone tried a soft module like plex, or something similar,
with good results? It seems that it'd be hell easy to setup sounds
that way but so far I've never tried one... Just soft synths and
samplers...

Any help or advice greatly appreciated...

I have the prootzoa its the only rom I got. I got my mp-7 with a protozoa
rom at agreat price and I sold the mp-7 rom. but the protozoa is great its
16 mb of the bread and butter acustic type instruments. The piano is great
its good for that twangy hip hop sound and its great for down tempo type
stuff too there are a few good strings. Ive made about 9 songs using just
one of the better string sounds. and Ive recently just discovered a cello
sound for hip hop. I really have no complaints about the sounds except as
far as drum kits go.. They sound great I love them but theres only 4 types
and not a decent 909 or 808 type sound. But you can do a great number of
things with this rom... But I am however planning on getting rid of mine
once I get the proteus drum rom and the orchestra strings and the vintage
keys roms. Actually I might not get rid of it but I heard somewhere that
there is a rom dedicated to letting you store 32 mb of just user created
presets is that true I sure hope so.. I sure could use that.

Yeah there is the 32MB flash ROM, which you can write your own
samples/instruments to using an E-MU Ultra sampler. I have both the sampler
and the flash ROM, but I haven't got round to programming it yet. If you get
yourself a flash ROM and send me that plus the samples you want on it, I
will be happy to program it for you. The flash ROMs aren't cheap however,
E-MU sell them for $396. I got mine for $160 dollars but it was the last one
they had in the shop.

Hi,

sorry, why don´t you buy a EOS Sampler?

I think about buying that prootzoa rom, too, has it some good guitars? It´s
the cheapest.

Thanks, I already have an ESi2000... I also have the Protozoa cd rom,
that is why it makes it so hard for me to spend the money on the rom
(s). If I spend the money only to find out that there isn't much
difference between the rom and the cds I'm going to be really
pissed... On top of that I have QS8 which has bread and butter sounds
which makes me think I'm just plain lazy... :) That's why I was
waiting to see if I can find a used rom or for them to go on sale. I
could use the money towards something else.... I'm still not sure
what to do...

BTW, thanks for the review D Rodriguez.....

The Protozoa CD and ROM are likely to have the same sounds. Also remember
that the average CD is up to 650MB in size compared to 32MB for an E-MU ROM,
so you won't have as many sounds on the ROM as on the CD.

You should have kept the MP-7 ROM. It's got 68 drumkit presets and 57 kit
instruments. Plus it's got loads of great sounds for hip-hop, drum n bass
etc. At first I thought the sounds were all a bit too rnb but with a bit of
programming they are more useable.

Actually I sold it as soon as I found out about the protean drum rom. I
think having a rom of nothing but drums would be a lot cooler to me
especially if they are decent acustic kits and plus I could use LIVE by
ableton my soft sampler/sequencer as a source of electronic drum sounds.

Thanks, I'm not really worried about it having the same sounds... but
the programming on the rom not being better. Many sounds on the cd
are pretty good but getting them to sound right on the Esi can be a
hassle... I don't like to spend to much time programming bread and
butter sounds...

The acoustic kits on the Drum ROM are lovely, you'll be happy with it for
sure.

Actually I sold it as soon as I found out about the protean drum rom. I
think having a rom of nothing but drums would be a lot cooler to me
especially if they are decent acustic kits and plus I could use LIVE by
ableton my soft sampler/sequencer as a source of electronic drum sounds.

well live by ableton is a great software gernerally focuse at sampling and
sequencing multiple tracks. It,ll let me record multi track guitar tracks
and let me chain together multiple internal pro quality effects and. I can
take loops I create or otherwise get my hands on and multi track sequence
as a live performance chop up or just apply cool effects to them. But What I
really enjoy About the software is the ability to take individual samples
meaning drum hits or abstract sounds and let me take my sequencer meaning
MP-7 and use the sequences i created on the mp-7 as templates for creating
new kits. I could use the crappy kits on my meager 16 mb of mp-7 (without
the phatt rom) and come up with a beat then take that sequence and assign
what ever sounds I want to use instead of the ones I used on the mp-7 all
this is done with midi and is not really too groundbreaking really but the
scale at which this is accomplished is really amazing to say the least.. so
basiclly with my mp-7 and a midi cable to my pentium 4 pc running ableton I
have almost basically one of those akai mpc 3000 except this is a way
supercharged version and maybe lacking to some extent but the general idea
is just exagerated to become the ultimate sequencing and sampling and yes
synthesis machine at under $ 2000 give or take a few hundred

Hi,

From your description I'm not sure you have fully understood the
capabilities of Ableton Live. I downloaded the demo a while back and am
pretty sure it can't do some of the things you're saying. You can sync it to
midi clock, and you can use a midi controller to control it but as far as I
know you can't 'come up with a beat then take that sequence and assign what
ever sounds (you) want to use instead of the ones (you) used on the mp-7'.

I might be wrong tho. Are there any Ableton Live owners on the list who can
enlighten us?

Regards,

Stu

I have a sp808ex for sale that would do this too, asking price is $450
(comes with a bunch of extras, external Zip drive, PCI to SCSI card, etc).

(please trim your posts guys!)

If all you're gonna use it for is to play one-shot samples triggered off
your MP-7 then you'd be better off buying a cheap sampler. There are
plenty
going on ebay for less than Ableton Live costs, and you don't need a
laptop
to run it on if you intend to play live.

Regards,

Stu
