XL7 and Cakewalk Sonar Setup Question

XL7 and Cakewalk Sonar Setup Question

2003-07-30 by tcdave

I have Several Questions:

I have Cakewalk Sonar and the XL7. I would like to use the XL7 with
Sonar. I would like to know how to set up the INSTRUMENT DEFINITIONS
in Sonar.

(1) Has anyone ever used this setup before?

(2) Do you think the Cakewalk Site might have a Download file for
this?

Also, I have the "Sounds of the ZR" rom included with the "standard"
sounds that come with the XL7.

(3) With over 1,000 sounds in the XL7, how does Sonar indentify the
instruments on the screen especially my "Sounds of the ZR"
instruments?

(4) Do you think that Sonar knows what sounds I have thru MIDI and
the lists them?

Yes. With HomeStudio (same thing).

Nope. They don't.

Excellent. How do you like that by the way? Is it any good I keep getting mixed reviews from
people.

It dosn't you have to specify within the Instrument definition... I have the one I made at home
I'm at the office... but basically you specify the Bank and Patch numbers within the definiton and
you're able to select them from there... There is an example file over at the Yahoo XL-1 group...
that you can check out... I just installed the Pure Phatt rom yesterday so I have to modify my
defintion for my XL-7.

> (4) Do you think that Sonar knows what sounds I have thru MIDI and

No. See previous. It's all about the definiton file... (.ins)...

Cheers...

Cakewalk Instument Definition File

2003-07-30 by steve_the_composer

; ------------------------------------------------------------------
; Cakewalk Instrument Definition File
; All E-MU P2k based synths/ROMs
; 6/26/2003
; By: Eric von Bayer
; ------------------------------------------------------------------

Eric von Bayer created and uploaded a comprehensive Cakewalk
Instrument Definition File dated 6/26/2003 for the p2k group.

It has: p2k, extreme, audity, composer, zr, pure phatt, B-3, beat
garden, techno synth, world, ensoniq, p2500, vintage collection,
advance orch, xlead, orchestral session 1 & 2.

pk2_all.ins should be in the files section here in a folder called
Cakewalk Inst Def. Files. The controller names section is set up for
the p2k, but you should be able to edit it for the default 16 knob E-
Mu gear controller assignments. Unfortunately, the file does not
have drum keymap assignments.

Hope this helps.

A big THANK YOU and a question. Any tips on how to edit these so
that expanded units show the patches from the extra ROM's? The
cakewalk manual has never really be clear on this. At least not for
me, unless I missed something.

I just downloaded the file p2k_all.ins and several banks for Sounds
of the ZR are in there (right after the XLead ROM banks). I'm not
sure why you didn't find them. Perhaps you downloaded a different
ins file.

Previously I wrote:

Today, accourding to MY Sonar 2.0, this is what I get out of
P2K_all.ins.

Audity 2000
MoPhatt
MP7
Orbit-3
P2K-Everything
Planet Earth
Proteus 2000
Proteus 2500
Vintage Pro
Virtuoso 2000
XL-7
Xtreme Lead-1

Thats all, NO "Sounds of the ZR" to be found in that .ins file. You
might wanna check it again. I would LOVE to find the ZR /ins file
wherever it mat be.

FLASH: While writing this, I think I figured out your problem!!!!
        Read all the way through, Dave Dude!!!!!

Sorry I wasn't able to help you on this one Dave Dude. Maybe someone
with Sonar can help.

From the file, here's what the ZR definitions look like:

; ------- E-MU P2k: Sounds of the ZR ROM --------

[E-MU P2k: Sounds of the ZR: Bank 0 (1024)]
0=kb1:PerfectPno 1
1=kb1:PerfectPno 2
 . . .

[E-MU P2k: Sounds of the ZR: Bank 1 (1025)]
0=kb1:Piano 1-GM
1=kb1:Piano 2-GM
 . . .

[E-MU P2k: Sounds of the ZR: Bank 2 (1026)]
0=syn:Bella
1=syn:CascadeBell
 . . .

[E-MU P2k: Sounds of the ZR: Bank 3 (1027)]
0=kit:Live-GM
1=kit:Standard
 . . .

Patch[1024]=E-MU P2k: Sounds of the ZR: Bank 0 (1024)
Patch[1025]=E-MU P2k: Sounds of the ZR: Bank 1 (1025)
Patch[1026]=E-MU P2k: Sounds of the ZR: Bank 2 (1026)
Patch[1027]=E-MU P2k: Sounds of the ZR: Bank 3 (1027)

WAIT A SEC DAVE DUDE!!!!!!!

I THINK I FIGURED IT OUT!!!!!!

The author has the bank setup in the Everything instrument
definition, but there is no separate ZR bank setup definition!!

So, you have a couple of options:

(1) Use the Everything definition and edit out all the stuff you
don't want (or just leave it in there and don't use the banks for
which you don't have ROMS).

(2) Using the Sonar user interface, define your own ZR definition
based on Everything banks 1024 -> 1027.

(3) Cut and Paste the patch definitions and edit a set of bank
definitions to create your own *.ins file. Such as:

[E-MU Sounds of the ZR]
Control=My E-Mu
Patch[0]=My E-Mu: User 0 (0)
Patch[1]=My E-Mu: User 1 (1)
Patch[2]=My E-Mu: User 2 (2)
Patch[3]=My E-Mu: User 3 (3)
Patch[1024]=My E-Mu: Sounds of the ZR: Bank 0 (1024)
Patch[1025]=My E-Mu: Sounds of the ZR: Bank 1 (1025)
Patch[1026]=My E-Mu: Sounds of the ZR: Bank 2 (1026)
Patch[1027]=My E-Mu: Sounds of the ZR: Bank 3 (1027)

Suggestion: Don't double click on the *.ins file to edit it. Run
notepad or wordpad and open the file up from inside.

Hope this helps.

You're welcome.

ATTENTION OTHER CAKEWALK USERS:

I e-mailed Eric (who compiled the *.ins file) and he's willing to
continue building the file as a master file, including the Command
Station default controllers and drum map definitions!!!

Can anyone point me in the direction of *.ins files which already
have drum key assignments for E-Mu presets?

Anyone willing to take on the task of converting a drum map or two to
*.ins format?

Hi all ,
I would be glad to give you a hand on this but, first I need to know
what I can convert.....I mean, I never saw any Drum Map for EMU
modules, I used to find this info into manuals shipped with the synth
(it was the case with all my previous waveforms based synths such as
Korg Trinity etc....)but my (old) XX7 HandBook doesn't have any
information about this...So if you can tell me where those drum maps
can be found, maybe I can do a part of the job.....

P.S : Dr.Steve , I think it would be cool if we could define what
kind of sound we want after randomizing , for example a bass sound or
a lead sound etc....As well as choosing in advance the number of
layers we want to use.....just a thought......

Best Regards

They're instrument keymaps. Theoretically, you could find out which
presets use which instruments and go about it that way, but that might
take a while...

Cakewalk .ins files

2003-08-05 by xromxx7

Ooops I forgot to mention I own 3 cakewalk definitons :

XTREME LEAD-1 banks as user presets (names updated & numbered 0-127)
XL-7 banks (Fifth bank added & Presets Names numbered from 0 to 127)
BEAT GARDEN banks (Presets Names numbered from 0 to 127)

Three separate files or a all-in-one version..........
I'm saying this because I found a lot of errors in XL-1 .ins file and
corrected them and added presets numbers in all definitions (I find
it's much more practical to recall where the sounds are with
precision now !).......If anyone is interested I will upload them in
the file section..........

Hi Aaron,
Thanks alot for answering so fast !
Unfortunately I tried http://www.emu.com/support/files/download2.asp?
Centric=560&Platform=1 many times but could'nt reach the netpage at
all ..... I will try to reach EMU Website later maybe I will have
more luck...
BTW You say theorically we could find out what sounds are in a
drumkit by looking to the instruments it uses..... But there's only 4
layers (so only 4 instruments) , knowing a kit usually uses 10,15 or
even more different sounds , how is it possible ? I mean to know
precisely which sound on which note as we don't know in detail what's
inside one instrument ? you meant playing the Pads and naming it by
hear ? Is there a trick to do it better than this ? Always glad to
learn from you !!

Best Regards

Can you not see www.emu.com at all? (note: you need the www.) If so,
go to support, downloads, and eventually you'll get to the keymaps.

Each instrument can contain up to 255 samples (I think). These samples
can be arranged over keys and/or velocities. Once you see the keymap,
it should be pretty clear. The only thing is that the kits can have up
to 4 instruments (read this as 4 collections of drum sounds) so going
from instrument keymap to preset keymap can be a bit annoying.

It's not *so* bad considering most presets use large (if not exclusive)
chunks of instruments (i.e. one instrument from C1 thru C6, and then
maybe a synth instrument elsewhere). Take a look through some of your
presets and see how they use instruments. A lot of times, there's only
one instrument being used.

Thanks Aaron !
I finally managed to reach EMU Website BUT....Now the problem is that
I could'nt find keymaps for XL7 and XL1 !!! Only Techno Synth worked
but it's a rom I don't have :(....Others kept telling me : Page not
found !!? I may have some connection problem.......I will retry
again , hope it's still online ...
Anyway thanks again for your explanations

cheers

Their links are wrong.  They're:

http://www.emu.com/support/files/storage/XL7_Drummap.txt
http://www.emu.com/support/files/storage/XLEAD_drummap.txt
http://www.emu.com/support/files/storage/PHATT_drummap.txt

Apparently their spelling is not so hot...

Big note: XL-7 and XLEAD are *IDENTICAL*. This is because the samples
and instruments are identical between those units. Ditto with the
MP-7/Phatt pair and also the CMPSR/POP Rom pair.
