I have the Proteus 2500 (and currently lurking on the XL7 group!?? the nerve! :^) In answer to the first part of your question: yes, there is a dedicated "knob hold" button on the unit as described in the manual. the SOS review threw me for a loop too with a mention of the phantom "touch strip hold". a touch strip which this unit does *not* even have. oops!
