I'll be perfectly honest and say that you should always use your ears.  If 
it sounds good, use it, if it doesn't, don't.  The filters that are geared 
towards a certain sound (and not saying you shouldn't sue those for other 
things too) are typically called things like Aceofbase, or Rolandbass, 
etc.
