I agree, it should be transparent (though ceasing to function for 3+ 
minutes is hardly transparent).  But if it is making things run smoother, 
then I'd at least like to know if there's an option to 'force it' to do 
this prior to critical shows or something.  That way, I can rest assured 
that it's not going to do the same thing on stage or whatever.

Bad idea. Compaction should be semantically transparent, except for
the time it takes. if compaction is changing the way the XL-7 behaves,
then the software is broken and the bug needs to be fixed.
