RE: [xl7] Timing issues

2002-03-05 by Andre Lewis

Actually the electribe clock is running slower. If the Electribe says it is
running at 120, it's really running @ 119.79. It's a total dud when it comes to
midi clock. Roland products have accurate clocks, the computer is generally
accurate, the Ravelution 309 is slow, the FutureRetro 777 clock is slightly
slow, and lord knows there are tons of different clocks going on. If you sample
them in to something and check/calculate the tempo, you'll see. That's
generally why you retrigger long samples every measure rather than letting them
loop. As far as clocks are concerned, it looks like the XL7's clock doesn't
support sub tempo's and can't sync to a clock that's actually not spot on. I
imagine this is a hot topic for getting fixed in the next OS, it's in the
wishlist:

Subject: Re: [xl7] Timing issues

After spending more time with the XL-7 over the
weekend, I have the following results:

1) The box cannot accurately sync to external MIDI
clock. It reports the wrong tempo coming from the
external device (either an Electribe or RM1X in my
case) and won't start or stay in sync. Gets way out
when I change patterns while "locked" to ext. MIDI
sync.

2) The box is much happier when acting as the MIDI
clock master. Outgoing clock signals drive the 'Tribes
and RM1X flawlessly, although changing patterns on the
XL-& while playing can still result in slight audio
hiccup under certain circumstances. Not terrible
though. Also, the output timing seemed better for some
reason when I switched the MIDI clock out to MIDI port
B.

I'm just starting to create my own patterns and
sounds. All the above occurred with the factory
patterns/sounds.

This is going to present a problem when I hook it up
to my Yamaha AW2816 disk recorder and want to use the
MIDI clock out from the recorder to sync the XL-7.
Will try that tonight and hope for the best.

Any assistance or insight would be appreciated, as I
really love the overall quality and features of the
XL-7 and would hate to return it at this point.
