There's not a particularly good way to audition sounds on another synth. I suppose you could hang out in the event edit screen with the dial on a program change event at tick 1, change it, hit play and then stop 3 times quickly.
I just tried it. It's actually kinda quick - turn then play, stop, stop, stop. Don't have to wait; it's more like a play and stop "triple-click".
Probably not as quick as dialing the synth itself, but it'd have the advantage of saving the correct program change into the track.

PS. the off by one thing is because Roland thinks that people can't understand the concept of "patch 0" so they add one to the incoming MIDI messages (0-127 maps to 1-128).

Subject: Re: [xl7] program changes + external gear trick
is this how you audition presets on external midi synths? Ive used a command
station for over 7 years and could never figure this out. my asr-x pro does
this flawlessly. is there a way to simply scroll thru the prog change
parameters and change external presets? currently i have to manually scroll on my motif
rack or xv5080 and match the the lsb, msb and preset and usually the preset#
is off by one. ???
