A trick I used to use is initially record the track to an internal
instrument. This would establish a program change at time event 0.0
("tick zero") which sends the program change right before the first
beat of the sequence. If you go to the last set of params in the
pattern edit menu, you can set the destination of the current track to
'EXT'.

Important - Until you change the track to 'ext' you can't see the
program change message event at tick zero.

If you don't use this method the program change will repeat each time
and yes - it'll make it hard to audition different presets on your
external synth. Tick 0 is only played back one time when you switch
the sequence no matter how many times it loops. This is another
(somewhat hidden) feature that should steer a lot of LivePA artists to
the Command Stations.


So the way I usually work with external devices on the CS (I've been
doing this a lot lately) is to record a little phrase into the CS and
then set the track to 'ext'. Now I can audition different presets
while my little midi phrase plays back. Once I decide on the preset, I
edit the program change number in tick 0. But with this flexibility I
can still change presets on the external synth if I suddenly want a
different sound during a performance. Just be wary of switching back
and forth between sequences.
