You could always try, the most they could say is no. But you need to talk to the right people/person with a clear intent on purpose (experimental, school. etc). Annotated source code would save weeks of time of reverse engineering. You can also extract and reverse the code from the updates. This would not be annotated. In either case, you will need a compiler/debugger application for the microprocessor used. Otherwise it will be trial and error with one and a half eyes closed (I have written embedded code before).
