programmable knobs

hi there.
when you set the programmable knobs in the controler menu for external 
controlling i know that you can only set controll for 16 knobs but is 
there  a way like say, switching presets that i can have a totaly new 
set of controllers. or is my only way of getting around this through 
multisetups?
