Hi, so you can over write the original emu patch banks, is that correct?

overwritten, but they are also copied to the User Banks when you buy a new 
Command Station.  It's the Presets that have been copied to the User banks 
that can be overwritten. <<<

Also is it possible to completey edit the drum kits in there, ie start 
from scratch and create your own with what ever samples are present on the 
roms you have installed?

>>>Not directly no, you're stuck with whatever is assigned in each Preset 
to some extent.  Each Preset (including Drum Presets) are made up of 4 
layers.  You can mix and match layers (the Protean Drum ROM is excellent 
for this BTW), and transpose each layer too, in addition to being able to 
layer up to 3 Presets at once.  This basically gives you 12 layers to use 
in making up your own kits.  If you're just waiting for your XL-7 to 
arrive, mioght not hurt to DL the manual and start reading so you can be 
up to speed when it arrives :) MIght want to get the FAQ and Tips and 
Tricks docs too from the files section of this group. <<<
