Gary Chang's case design

Gary Chang's case design

2002-06-10 by grantrichter2001

Hello All,

Gary Chang has designed a very nice compact case for his
Wiard modules. I have uploaded a picture of the initial aluminum
back piece to the photos section.

Gary and I are doing the power wiring differently for this case
design. The DIN plug in back is eliminated and the DC supply is
distributed by Blacet PSCONs located behind the jack boards.
Power wiring comes out through the slot in the module cover.

I have asked Gary to get a quote for a 6 module wide version of
this case. If the price is not too outrageous, I'm going to try and
come up with a standard design. It would be nice to find a way to
fit a Blacet PS500 supply inside the case also.

The wooden cases look very nice, but they add a lot of space. I
have been meaning to explore a more space saving case
design, but it seems Gary has already come up with the most
compact possible design.

Existing modules could be retrofit to the case by soldering a new
power connector to the PC boards.

Of course the aluminum case could be anodized blue or black
(silver, plum?)

Me an art director by trade. Contrast is a good thing.

Silver

Dull silver with blue faceplates = terrific

Plum with blue faceplates = (insert sound of gameshow beeper
when you guess an answer incorrectly here)

Blue with black: = (insert sound of gameshow beeper when you
guess an answer incorrectly here)

Blue with blue faceplates: too much of a good thing

My $.02.

love you guys,

Peter Grenader

You are a man of great taste.

For the record, it looks like my case will be anodized grey.

The case is .090 aluminum (the same gauge as the faceplates of the
Wiard modules). The endbells will be cut from the same material and
welded in place, providing consistent strength and rigidity throughout
the unit.

Mounting of modules is achieved via Vector TS600 T-slot extrusions and
square 4-40 nuts that slide in the channel. These extrusions will be
welded into the place, recessing the modules slightly into the case.

Two Blacet PSCON boards mount on the surface behind the jackfields, and
connect to an external power supply via 4 pin xlr connector panel
mounted on the hidden panel (inside the triangular tunnel on the bottom
of cabinet).

Total weight, including modules is expected to be under 20 lbs.
