Steve,

The module you are requesting is a fixed filter bank (FFB). Other modulars have
them and they are quite useful at shaping sounds. They are also like Low Pass
filters in that each design tends to sound different so there are lots of
possibilities! You can use a 410 for some of these effects but it isn't as handy as
a true fixed filter bank.

I know FFBs have been brought up before on the list but something that might be
interesting is to understand a few of the characteristics of the different FFBs that
have been made to see what makes them sound unique. The Moog FFB has a bunch of
inductors and sounds very unique. The EMS FFB is just a bunch of 741 op amp filter
circuits, I think and also has a unique and sought after sound. I wonder if JH has
some wisdom and experience in this area to share...?

what we *really* need is an FFB that can be modulated in a different way to
a 410, ie cut / boost (or maybe Q..?) modulated by an envelope follower
(i'm thinking drum loop processing here)
looking to the Urei Little Dipper as a model, the attenuation would ideally
be pretty severe (far more than 20dB) and maybe a high & low shelf
if we stuck to say five bands, all with the same wide frequency range, and
some chain facility, people could get just the one, or go balmy and get
seven of em...

any thoughts..?

cheers
paul

steve,
now, i must agree, THIS is a module that could really make motm stand out!

Not much wisdom (;->). I never built an inductor-based filter bank.
I have built a copy of the EMS filter bank once, and I like its smooth sound
a lot. The filters aren't very steep, which is part of its character.

There are 741's in the original, but there are also a lot of polystyrene
caps, and
the overall impression of its quality is very good, despite the poor opamps.
It's also built with very low impedance (large caps, very small resistors).

Personally I would not build a commercial clone of this - EMS is an active
company - and I suppose Paul shares this point of view. But there's a lot of
other options for a filter bank ...

Of course! What is a vocoder but *two* filter banks, envelope followers and VCAs
:-)

I also like some of the other ideas pointed out; the interpolating scanner and
heavily VC'd small filter sets. Although, I tend to agree with the observation
about the EMS filter bank that the not-so-steep-sloped filters make for a smoother
sound that is perhaps better suited to the sort of shaping one does with a fixed
filter bank.

JH can you direct me to a schematic?
thx

I don't have one. I had the original open and just taken notes about the
design, but no schemos.
