You're absolutely right!!! Why do they have to confuse me by putting a dot
and a notch on the case? I must have checked it 10 times before noticing.

Re: [motm] 410 HELP!!!

2000-04-28 by Nathan Hunsicker

Also, could I have done any damage to the op amp by running it backwards?
(it was only for 2 or so minutes) If I damaged it, is it any different
thana standard off-the-shelf TL074? And just a curiosity question, what are
the vactrol units actally designed to do? some sort of LED driver? -Nate

That is an easy mistake to make, and easy one to avoid. I did the same
thing myself because of confusion on ICs marked with the dot instead of the
notch (different IC though). That was the only time for me having a MOTM
module not work perfect on first try. Something Paul told me (another
thing obvious) that I never even realized is that the writing on the chips
are all the same direction too. So, another last check before smoking your
favorite op amp is are they all facing the same so you can read the numbers
(as a last "did I screw anything up" before power up re-check). So far, on
MOTM, Paul has made them all face the same way.

ALWAYS compare the orientation of the writing on the top with the other ICs
if there is any question.

I would replace it. It's off-the shelf, nothing special.

The vactrol is a combination LED and photocell. It's a variable resistor!

Re: [motm] 410 HELP!!!

2000-04-28 by Nathan Hunsicker

If I understand this correctly, the vactrol is a variable resistor who's
value is set by the brightness of an internal led. Wouldn't this be a
somewhat easy solution to those of us looking to add cv control over an
existing pot? Of course, I don't even know if these pieces are still in
production, readily available, or what the specs are. (value, tollerance,
current) -Nate

Remember, it's a *resistance*, not a pot with a wiper! In some cases, you
can do it
but in most you can't.

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
