No, the local school system owned the Ionic Performer. I just hogged it several
times ;) I had almost forgotten about it until I ran across a picture in Peter
Forrest's books "Analogue Synthesizers" {A-M & N-Z}. Lots of info in these books.

I've got a data sheet on the Ionic.... interesting stuff. Actually I've got
a lot of old synth datasheets that I would love to scan one of these days.

eric,
gee, when i was in high school, we never had any cool stuff like that.......i
did get lots of useable stuff for electro-noise from the electronics class i
was in though.
years later, i met a music teacher from another county whose school did have
a program about e.m. for music students. i took my serge to demo for them a
few times and gave the teacher my old paia modular to use in the classes. the
kids got quite a bit of usage from it and that made me feel good !
best,
dave

ivan,
i had one about 25 years ago but its long since gone to the cruel ravages of
time.....if i remember correctly, mine was printed on newsprint, had several
pages and was like a small newspaper. i recall they offered "turnkey"
packages with tape machines, effects devices, amps, etc.. is this the stuff
you have ?
best,
dave v.

Yes, I have that and a small color postcard with a photo of the Ionic. I was
going through some old files in storage a few weeks ago and found the Ionic
"newspaper." It is still in surprisingly good shape.

You, sir, are a most generous man. Were I wearing a hat at the moment, I'd
remove it for you. (And anyone else who makes such donations to schools...)

paul,
well, i don`t know that it was that big a deal but it was great to hear some
of the kids doing good stuff with the old stuff i wasn`t really using
anymore. plus, while a modest synth, paia stuff had a certain charm that i
liked and being modular, exposed them to the idea of mix and match component
sound creation before they got a midi kybd from the local music store and
started their own bands ! :^)

dave

Well, I've got it in the original white clasp envelope (w/postcard, too!)
Mine is sort of a weird yellow-orange
tint, however!

Starting at about age 13 (I'm 37 now) I started gathering any and all
synthesizer literature. Years later I still have most of this collection. I
also used to work with a guy who was one of the original ARP dealers, so I've
got his old collection of ARP manuals and technical service documents.
Interesting stuff!

Wow; I don't have the envelope. Mine is that odd color too, and as I
remember it came that way! It left an impression in my memory...

paul,
ditto, amazing.
i remember having that, some moog lit on mini and sonic six, arp on odyssey,
buchla music easel, ems data sheets ( i think i still have these ! ), eml 101
and paia docs. these were all pre-1973 as i was still in high school. got my
first paia modular ( with the wire / button kybd ) right after getting out. i
guess i have always been out of the mainstream because i remember that the
units that impressed me were the vcs3/aks, eml 101 and music easel. moog and
arp didn`t ignite my interest. bought the first paia because the whole kit
package was something like $150 ( controller,pwr/interface panel,vco,lp
vcf,bp vcf,vca,ar e.g.,lfo/noise). about 2 years later, my 3rd synth was
another paia modular, this time with a real kybd, all the above modules plus
their first add-ons, an inverter/buffer,sine/pwm convertor and an env.
follower. paid $100 for this one used. built a box holding all the modules
with the new kybd in the old case and this was the system later given to the
school. a couple of years later, added the eml101 and that held me until my
first really serious modular unit came along via an insurance check.
it may just be nostalgia on my part, but i sometimes miss all my kludgey old
radio / junk e.m. stuff and my array of tormented mono tube tape recorders (
did some weird things to them and they still worked ! ) and even the paia. it
had a unique character. plus , early on i learned to do stuff like feed the
wrong wave shapes into the sine/pwm converter to get odd sounds, their lp
vcf, while super elementary, was actually a simple vc slope with a fixed
freq. which was surprisingly useful. ( paul, ever given any thought to a vc
slope vcf - having used it before on the serge, it is a very useful thing to
add to a vcf design. i`ll assume you`ve read the basis article about
instrument synthesis by david luce, formerly of moog music ).
anyway, enough nostalgia and rambling........off to make dinner........
best,
dave

ivan,
cool....... i started in high school ( got out in 1973 ) and i`m 45. still
have a few bits and pieces of old literature but, sadly, lots has also been
lost.
actually, i was looking through some stuff and i see i`ve still got some
copies of "electronic music review" ( originally sponsored by moog music but
truly an open and wonderful mag ) and my collection of "source : music of the
avante garde" ( also a completely crazy, inspirational mag full of neat ideas
). these predate stuff like "polyphony" and "synapse".
best,
dave v.

I think I remember seeing that about the time that the only other thing was
Electronotes. Or was that later? I do have a lot of the early Polyphony
mags too.

ivan,
i just looked and "emr" #1 carries a cover date of january 1967. i think it
ran thru late `68 or early `69 and put out about 6 issues. "electronotes"
started, if i recall correctly, about 1972. i have those from #1 to around
#160. "polyphony" i have all of from #1 to the last issue. don`t remember the
years, though.
best,
dave v.
