Ghost Town, Modular multiples and Kenton 2000

Insert classic ghost town whistle here...

Ooh wee ooh wee ooooooohhhhhh!!!!

The list has been a ghost town man. Where is everybody? Is anybody afraid to
talk due to the recent conversations about list content?

Anyway, I found a company called "Middle Atlantic" who sells a 2 unit rack
similar to the Frakrack by Paia and the rack rails by MOTM. You can purchase
pre-punched 2 space wide panels for this thing with holes for 1/4" jacks,
XLR, ,Pots, vents or computer connectors.

I plan to mount one of these racks at the bottom of my twelve space SKB for
my MOTM and use the individual 2x2 panels for multiples, Headphone Pre-amp
and a VU meter maybe. Maybe even a joystick in the future if Paul doesn't
come out with a MOTM one! You can buy the 2x2's with either 8 or 4 holes for
1/4" jacks. You can make the 8 hole guy into a multi that is two sections of
4 that connect as 8 with a switch you have to drill in separately. The model
number of the rack is MPS-FK and the panels are MPS-3/8X8. You can also get
blank panels.

Check it out at middleatlantic.com and tell me what you think. I don't know
about pricing yet because they do not allow for on-line ordering. Apparently
they have to contact you with the closest vendor to you via e-mail. Pretty
cool for modular multiples or smaller modules that won't take up a whole
blank MOTM panel! I think I remember seeing these locally for about $25 for
the rack and $5 each for the panels? Not really sure.

PS. For you Kenton 2000 owners out there. Is there enough room on the rack
ears to drill holes 2 rows for 1/4" jacks on either side of the Kenton? I
would like to mount jacks here and make 1/8" to jack adapter cables so I can
access all of the Kenton rear mounted jacks 1/4" style from the front face
of my modular. how about additional room for a MIDI in jack too. Is it
possible? Give me a shout. Thanks for your help and opinions.

It has been kinda quiet lately... I tried to start up a conversation last week on
the matrix patching and that fizzled quickly. I guess Paul's comment about "sucking
pond water" kinda killed things ;) That's OK, I wanted opinions and I got 'em!

Middle Atlantic makes lots of stuff, including some reasonable studio furniture. It
is pretty widely available. Guitar Center and MARS both carry it. On line, you
should be able to find it from www.zzounds.com and www.sweetwater.com. I have a CD
shelf from them that is just the thing for holding CD-ROMs, etc. in the studio. I
have some racks from them which are so-so. They were relatively inexpensive and met
my size requirements but I had one arrive broken and I've had some alignment
problems with them. For metal panels however, Middle Atlantic makes good stuff.

I can't speak for everyone on the list, but I have been in "house-buying" mode lately and that has kept me too busy to keep up with the list as much as I would like.

As far as drilling out the rack ears on the Kenton Pro-2000, I don't believe there is enough room to bring every jack from the back around to the front. I solved this problem by making a custom 1U high X 19" Long "Breakout Panel" for my MOTM (see attached bitmap). Not only does it bring all of the 1/8" jacks from the back of the Kenton to the front as 1/4" jacks, it also brings all of the MIDI jacks around front as well. I even had room for several Quad Multiples Jacks. It really works great and was relatively easy to build!

I've used these products and a number of our (EAW) reps represent them as
well. Good quality product, and a good company to work with.

BGW also has a similar product. Both of these companies will do custom work
too, although it isn't cheap. Another custom shop that does REALLY nice work
is RCI Custom Products:

eric,
one thing i noticed was that you asked about arp 2500 style matrix "bus bar "
switching ( which i`ve never used... only read about and most of the comments
about them weren`t that favorable in terms of crosstalk, panel space
utilization / efficiency and reliability ) and the thread jumped to ems style
pin matrix`s ( which i`ve also, sadly, never used ) but, there too, i`ve read
lots of stuff about reliability issues, crosstalk and cv node summing errors
that make me wonder about their long term use vis-a-vis patchcords. i`d love
to have had the opportunity to have tried out an aks or vcs3 to find out for
myself ! aspects of their system design / packaging are interesting and
certainly, some very nice e.m. has come from people who use them ( or their
gigantic cousin, the synthi100 ).
me, i guess i`m "old fashioned" ( or was that just "old" ) ( or is the new
buzzword "retro" - ??? ), i have found patchcords satisfactory over the years
and never really looked for a different alternative.
best,
dave v.

Hey, speaking of list content... Doesn't that kind of sound belong on the
Levnet Theremin list? <grin>

PS. For you Kenton 2000 owners out there. Is there

I have done this, but you cannot get ALL functions. You can get up to six
1/4 jacks per ear. Or, four jacks and a MIDI IN. So, I have MIDI in and
both CVs and GATEs on one ear, and the six AUX outs on the other. That
takes care of all MY front panel needs. Otherwise you need to expand to
other locations like the panel Chris did (or some other version).

Hi All !

Saw saw Paul's "pond water" response :)

Just remembered that on AH there was a discussion about this . Some
users chipped in and thought it was not "that bad" .

Search the AH archives at :

www.midiwall.com

Bye for now .

Keep 'em oscillating :)
