Totally off topic

Totally off topic

2000-02-16 by Nathan Alan Hunsicker

As I was going through I box of old chips I found in the basement, I came
accross 12 MOS6581 chips. If I recall these were the 8 bit noisemaker sound
chips from the Commodore 64. Has anyone ever played with these? Are they of
any use in a Module? I know this was a hybrid analog/digital chip with 3
Osc (Tri, Saw, Pulse, Noise) 3 EG's, 12db Filter, Ring Mod & Audio Input.
It may have to be driven by a 6502 or similar processor. Is there any hope
for these chips, or should I toss them back in the box? I wouldn't mind
having a cheesy Atari 2600 sounding tone generator. Let me know what you
think. -Nate

PS I've got 12 so I'm willing to share if anyone wants to play around.

Now, there is a box called a SIDStation that does this very thing! Kind of
expensive (~$450). Reviews are mixed.

I've got a SidStation that uses these. While not the world's answer to
musical instruments, this thing is a SERIOUS sound creation device. It can
do some great things, in my opinion. Check out the following links:

For info on the MOS6581 SID chip itself, check out:

And there is another Sid machine, although I'm not sure it is in production:

The third link doesn't work for those of us using Internet Explorer. It does
a redirect to a tiresome "Evil Empire" poster page (give me a break).

The MP3s sound cool though.
