Stuck in a rut

Stuck in a rut

2007-09-19 by cormallen

Hi all,

I seem to be stuck in a bit of a rut with my MOTM at the moment; I
seem to patch up the same sorts of sounds every time.

I'd be grateful if people could suggest any odd module interactions
that they've had fun with. I'm not looking for complete sounds, just
ideas for things I might not have tried, like "try connecting the
output from the wavewarper back into the audio inputs", or "audio rate
modulation of PWM". (I've done quite a lot of both of those, but I
hope you get what I mean).

Or to pick one area in particular, I've never managed to get anything
compelling by using the soft sync option on the 300s. Any ideas there?

Thanks in advance,

Harry

I understand what you mean. I've found myself in a sort of 'single layer' 2d
thinking about patching the modular lately.

What are the 'same sorts of sounds' youve been patching up that you want to get
out of? Do you usually play your modular with a keyboard or no?

Sometimes I find it useful to block out a module or two that I always use and
force myself to start playing with others in different ways. I also seem to
still get a LOT of mileage out of the typical FM modulation index patch.

I like the sound of soft sync. I like the sound of hard sync, too,
but they are definitely different.

Have you tried modulating the synced (slave) osc when using soft
sync? FM it with an EG or an LFO. With the right amount of FM, you
can get it to sweep between a few different harmonic relationships.

Note: I've got dotcom VCOs, not MOTM; using the VCO aid module, the
dotcoms have a soft sync attenuator (without the aid module they only
have hard sync). I can only assume that the MOTM acts similar to a
dotcom with the pot fully open. So, try attenuating the master sync
signal, because it does make a difference. If you've got a spare VCA,
use it to modulate the sync master.

Thanks for the response!

There are a few main things I do with the modular:

1. Standard sort of 'moogy' lines played form a keyboard. Usually
things like Sawtooth -> 440 -> 420(HPF)

2. Weird noises, normally played on knobs.

3. Drones, not played from the keyboard. Often these are strongly
rhythmic, based around beating oscillators, LFOs and my Milton.
(These are the most fun to patch, often turning into monster 40-module
behemoths, but I usually only need one or two sounds like this in a
given piece of music).

4. Processing other audio, my guitar, etc.

I'm very happy with 3 & 4; it's 1 & 2 where I seem to be a bit stuck
for ideas. What I do get sounds glorious, but whatever variations I
try - multiple oscillators, miniwaves, different filters in parallel
or series - always has the same 'feel' to it.

If you want to hear the sorts of sounds I'm stuck in, then here's an
old piece of ours that's depressingly typical:

Ah, now that's a good idea. I've been trying the inverse; taking a
module I don't use often and trying to use it. I like your idea better!

Thanks,

Harry
