want to get out of?  Do you usually play your modular with a keyboard

There are a few main things I do with the modular:

1.  Standard sort of 'moogy' lines played form a keyboard.  Usually
things like Sawtooth -> 440 -> 420(HPF) 

2.  Weird noises, normally played on knobs.

3.  Drones, not played from the keyboard.  Often these are strongly
rhythmic, based around beating oscillators, LFOs and my Milton. 
(These are the most fun to patch, often turning into monster 40-module
behemoths, but I usually only need one or two sounds like this in a
given piece of music).

4.  Processing other audio, my guitar, etc.
 
I'm very happy with 3 & 4; it's 1 & 2 where I seem to be a bit stuck
for ideas.  What I do get sounds glorious, but whatever variations I
try - multiple oscillators, miniwaves, different filters in parallel
or series - always has the same 'feel' to it.

Ah, now that's a good idea. I've been trying the inverse; taking a
module I don't use often and trying to use it.  I like your idea better!
