filter selection....

filter selection....

2006-07-05 by Phil Peery

Hi everyone,

With the BIG SALE coming up, I've been thinking about filter
selection. I've already got a 420 and a 490, and am going for the
MOTM-440, but due to current budget, can only get one other filter at
this time. I've been going back and forth between the 410 and the
480. I do really like the vocal formant sounds that you can get from
the 410, but the 480, along with the mods at www.pugix.com also look
really cool. I'd like to get some opinions to help me choose between
the two.

Thanks!

Phil

FWIW: I have all of the filters that you list. I really like both the 410
and the 480, and it would be hard to choose one over the other. The 410 is
unique among the MOTM filters because of its triple-BP topology; the 480 is
possibly more useful in a general-purpose sense. Given your other choices
the 410 would probably provide more variety than the 480. I like the 410 so
much that I got a second one (for stereo!), but will also be adding a second
480 to my system during the BIG SALE.

yeah given that phil already has plenty of LP and HP action going on,
maybe the 410 is the best option. it has some very nice smooth and
(importantly) narrow filters.

but the pugix-enhanced 480 is a double multimode monster!

Good choice on the 440! I'm going to get a second one of those myself.

Comparing the 410 and the 480 is apples to oranges in my view. The 410
is more like a phase shifter, a stomp-box-like effect, with built-in
LFOs. It's really nice, but quite different from the 480, which is a
cascaded state-variable filter. They have different uses. Listening to
the sound samples is a good way to decide.

Also, be advised that to convert the 480 to a dual unit the way I did, a
goodly amount of DIY experience is recommended. (If anyone does this,
do let me know!)

What Adam said, except that I do stereo all the time with one 410: Out
1 panned to the left, 2 center, and 3 to the right. Do what you want
with Mix out (I geberally ping-pong it). This is a GREAT way to get a
beautiful spread from a single patch, particularly with the mode
switch in the DUAL position...I *love* the 480, but if I had to
choose, it would be the 410 by a hair.

Adam's right. I've got two 410's - one with the wonderful Oakley OMS-
410 expansion module - and I couldn't get along without them! One is
enough for a great stereo sound, but two allow you to go nuts with
the CV inputs for depth and rate and create a very animated sound
field.

Now to be fair, I don't own a '480 - yet! When the date arrives for
the big sale, however, don't stand in between me and that filter! If
it says "Synthesis Technology" on the front panel, it is a necessary
module.

Chub: you neeeeeeed a 480, no doubt about it. Mine is actually challenging
my 440s as my most-favorite filter. It sounds gorgeous, but I miss the
additional FM inputs that the 440 and other filters have. When I get my
second kit, I'm going to take a long look at Richard's modifications and
consider what customizatons I want to do with the thing.

So yeah, two 410s, two 440s, two 480s... However, I have yet to hear
anything about the 485 that makes me want one. Are there any 485 owners out
there who would like to explain to me how it is that I'm missing the point
on this one? I'm debating whether it should go on my BIG SALE shopping list,
simply because it's an MOTM filter, but I've yet to hear either verbal
descriptions or sound samples that provoke my gotta-have-it impulse.

The 485 is another must-have, IMO, particularly in pairs. It does
such a beatiful job on brass-like timbres and they are worth the money
on that strength alone. However, if ever a filter can get evil on
you, the 485 is it - drive it hard and crank the res and it will grind
you into submission. Cool!

I second this.

I use my 2x 485 units to process my P5 and other synths all the time. Feed them an LFO to the FM--> sine on one side tri on the other and you get some really nice panning FX. A little goes a long way. Note: they aren't as quiet as the other filters but I don't mind it at all, esp if I am processing a soft-synth.
