OT: Halogen Lamps

OT: Halogen Lamps

2006-01-09 by Tkacs, Ken

Here’s a weird question.

IKEA has these small lamps with the bulb enclosure at the end of a pair of telescoping rods. (They’re in IKEA’s Magiker series; they’re only about $12 each). I was thinking they might be good for on top of the modular, so that the lighting could shine down and back onto the faceplates.

But I noticed in the store that they have some kind of transformer brick. I don’t really know the theory behind halogen lights—it says they’re 12 volts--but seeing that brick kind of reminds me of a fluorescent light’s transformer and makes me think that maybe a lamp like this would not be a good mix with audio equipment.

Does anyone know for sure?

Here’s a photo if you’re interested: http://www.ikea.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=12&langId=-1&catalogId=10101&productId=19151

Thanks in advance.

The transformer here is step-down. They do run on 12V. 120VAC out of
wall to transformer to 12VAC to halogens. Don't know if you'd want them
in your face. They get pretty hot.

The transformer is just a 10:1 step-down transformer, going from your
household 120AV to 12VAC. It *will* generate some interference, but
almost entirely just a 60hz hum. I don't find that wall-warts generate
too much noise, as there's a TON of wal-wart happening. I think it might
be interesting to run the halogen straight off of the 15 volts on your
power supply... OVERCLOCK THE BULB, MAN! (That would, of course, not
ACTUALLY be advisable)

There will also be a big spike on the AC line when you turn it on/off. I'm
sure the power supplies Paul is putting in the MOTM can deal with it but
you average consumer audio amp will pass it straight on to your tweeters...
