patch cable wire

patch cable wire

2002-10-19 by Chris Walcott

What is everyone using for patch cable wire? I always build my own cables.
I'm looking for something flexible, comes in different colors (like red and
blue) and has a drain wire. I was considering something like Canare quad
mic cable but that wire doesn't have a drain and I'm not too excited about
dressing that many ends with a tight braid.

thanks!

Good question! As a new MOTM user, I am looking into this as well. I
haven't decided yet if I want to build my own cables or pay a little
extra to have someone like Markertek do it. (Building patch cables
isn't all that exciting.)

For the 1/4" plugs, I am leaning to the Canare F-15:

http://www.canare.com/audiolineconnectors/audiolineconnectcover.html

I have built "RCA" patch cables with the F-10s - these are really nice
connectors, easy to solder, etc. I actually don't have any experience
with the F-15 yet (I hope they have the same "solder cup" for the
center contact as the F-10) - I plan to order a few samples and take a
look before making a final decision.

I don't see any value in using star quad type cable for unbalanced
patch cords. I asked Paul about cables and he mentioned the Conquest
USA-1, which is a single conductor shielded "guitar cord" type cable.
Unfortunately, Markertek doesn't seem to sell this stuff. As an
alternative, I am looking at Mogami 2792 - this is nice flexible cable
that I have used before and it is available in multiple colors.
(Markertek stocks black, blue, green, red, and yellow for the 2792.)
This has a spiral type shield as opposed to a braid so it is much
easier to terminate. It also has the conductive coating over the
insulation on the inner conductors which is intended to reduce
microphonics in the cable. (Handling noise - though probably only
applicable for microphone applications where low signal level/high
gain are involved.)

If anyone else has suggestions for cable - I'd love to hear about it.

I bought some of the last few spools of colored cable that DGS Gotham made.
It's now discontinued. I had to get it mailed in from Switzerland. It's
available in blue, red, yellow, and black and is very rubbery and flexible (no
drain thought). Black is still available in the US. The reason I mention this
is I'm still debating whether I want to sell/auction off a spool each of red,
blue, and yellow. I kind of had it in the back of my mind I might make some
modular synth cable sets to sell, but it's boring work and not very profitable.

Just use Concord USA-1 cable, comes in like 6 colors, VERY flexible.

I've been looking around for this cable. It is what John K. was using for
his cables. Do you know of any reasonable sources for this cable?

Hmm...I just remembered he said something about "only available in 5,000ft spools"! But it was
also 6 cents/foot.

Hey, I've got 200 Neutrik 1/4" connectors sitting here calling for me to do
something with them. If someone is interested in buying a spool and
splitting it up, I am good for about 500 feet. I agree the USA-1 cable
seems nice. I have some of the Kovacky cables. However, I know it will be
a LONG time before I can get to soldering mine. Maybe that is another task I
can teach my wife to do. :)

BTW, I am taking the Wacky Kovacy cable page down from my website. John has
not bothered to answer my e-mail when I inquired.

I'll see if I can find out where to get the cable from, and look at getting
a BIG spool. If anyone else is interested let me know.

I'm sorry to hear that this stuff has been discontinued. I used some awhile
ago and liked it a lot.
