Hi all, I'm getting my first LFO, and can't decide which one to take. Any suggestions? Thanks, Robert

Any suggestions? hi robert... well, it depends on what else you have. :) i'm guessing if this is your first LFO, you might not have a lot of other modules. if that's the case, maybe the quad lfo is what would be the most fun for you. but if you've got sequencers and things that give off pulses or anything else that can mess with how an lfo works, i strongly recommend the 320. i've got a relatively small system, but there are two 320s in it. syncing them to clock pulses, to each other, and cross-fming them is SO much fun. plus you can use them as VCOs if you're short on those like i am. hope that helps! bleep (lfo junkie). out. --- www.mp3.com/leichenfeld www.mp3.com/captainhotrod www.mp3.com/silenttristero

Any suggestions? > I'm assuming "first [motm] LFO" in your modular: I would suggest the 320 over the other 2 motm 'micro' lfo's (if these are the only 3 you are comparing). Reasons: 1 - 320 has 4 waveforms simultaneously available (other 2: limited number of waveforms available) 2 - shape option is great for 'customizing' wave shape *and* is voltage controllable (e.g., change lfo waveform shape with env. gen. attack) 3 - sync in option is useful for starting a waveform "in sync" with other control voltages (e.g., start rising edge of sawtooth along with env. gen. attack) or "sync'ing" with a 300 (especially at lower frequencies) 4 - fm has + and - scale (e.g., env. gen. attack can decrease lfo speed) 5- can serve as low frequency audio osc w/ 1V-oct cv Basically, the 320 is packed with great features, great quality, and great versatility. Then add either of the other 2 lfo's as you see your 'fun' developing. Anyway, just my $.02, Jeff

Tough one. One of my favorite MOTM modules is the quad lfo. If you take the summed out and vary each lfo's rate *just a tiny bit* with respect to each other, you can get some lovely modulations. Plus you can get up to 4 separate lfos from a 1U module. Only SIN and TRI though. The uLFO is very cool, too. You get two separate LFOs again in 1U but you also get SQR out and different rate ranges. Lots of fun packed into a 1U package. All that said, since this is your first, I would definitely recommend the 2U 320. The SYNC, FM, and SHAPE cvs are so useful and interesting, plus you get 4 wave shapes at once: SIN, TRI, SAW, and SQR. It's a challenge to build, almost on par with the 300, but it's probably the best LFO module of the bunch. Mike --- In motm@y..., Robert van der Kamp <robnet@w...> wrote:

1st one -> MOTM-320 2nd one -> MOTM-320 :) George ----- Original Message -----

What about the MOTM-101 Noise/sample and hold? While not exactly an LFO, it does provide very interesting-certainly complex and at times completely unpredictable-control voltages for your system. As an added bonus, you get a great noise source! As if that wasn't enough, you can use all outputs simultaneously, just like other MOTM modules. Which is best, though? Gee, maybe you should just buy one of each! Chub --- In motm@y..., Robert van der Kamp <robnet@w...> wrote:

I've read a lot of the other replies, and the consensus seems to be for the 320, the "mother of all LFOs". I don't have a 320 yet, but those replies are convincing me to get one. My personal preference is to use a lot of LFOs, and I have a 380 and a 390 so far. I like both of them. My hesitance on the 320 is that I get only one LFO in 2U. But I do appreciate its features. For me the best compromise is the 390, in which one of the LFOs has an FM input (that I drive with the other LFO quite often). I personally would recommend getting 2 390's to start (4 lights! fun...fun...fun...). And a 320 next. I do like the 380, too, especially the mixed output. But having voltage controlled LFOs is important... especially if you have other LFOs to control them with! -Richard Brewster ----- Original Message -----

Remember, Richard-the 320 makes a useful VCO as well! That makes the 2U space well worth the price of admission! Chub

Uncle! Uncle! I'm convinced. Now, am I going to get ONE or TWO? Decisions, decisions. -Richard

Thanks for all the suggestions, guys. Looks like the 320 is your fav LFO. - Robert
