Stackable 1/4" Plugs?

Stackable 1/4" Plugs?

2002-02-02 by sucrosemusic

The idea just came upon me. I remember a discussion about bananna
plugs vs. 1/4", and i don't remember if the concept of stackable 1/4"
plugs came in. Granted, they'd stick out like mad, but I'm certain
it's feasable. Does anybody make these? They'd have to be a bit
longer than the 1/4" plug itself on the outside, but you could make
the cable come out of the side at a diag. fairly easily without
mucking up your modular too much.

Does anybody know where we could find these?

Switchcraft Y Cables (was Re: Stackable 1/4" Plugs?)

2002-02-02 by sucrosemusic

The hosa stuff is *ok,* but it's not great. They cetainly have what
we're looking for, but the cable is not very thick, and the jacks and
plugs are mediocre. I'm fairly certain that Switchcraft makes inline
jacks. We could probably make a batch of these cables fairly
easily. If you guys are OK with "Horizon" cables, I know they do
custom orders all the time, we could make a batch of 2 fem - 1 male,
6" (or even less) cables.

The shortcoming here is that my recollection of the ends is that
they're pretty large, for the heavier gague stuff, but I do recall
one that's not much larger than the regular switchcraft plugs.

(I work for a Horizon dealer, so if you folks want, I can find out
what retail on those cables would be, but don't feel that I should
sell them to you. I feel it's a conflict of interests to bring my
personal life to work.)

You know, as crazy as this sounds.... It does lend itself to another
interesting question for something almost like you are discussing. What
about when you have a voltage you want to take only 2 different places? How
many times do we use a 4-square jack mult for 1IN - 2OUT? Instead of
stringing a cable to the mult and then back from the mult to the two
separate destinations, how about one of these two ideas:

1. Have a handful of portable mults. These would be a VERY short "Y" cable
with one male and 2 females (flexible, not stiff). You plug it to the
source, plug the two cables tight into it and take them directly where they
go. You reduce cable clutter by one cable and don't string out of your way
to get to a mult. You would not use these for mults with many cables. But
how many times are we just going 2 places. Even 3 would work. Think of
them as highly portable 3 jack mults.
--or--
2 - have a cable that has an the "Y" at one end, so you can always piggy
back on a second cable.
--or--
3. Keep quite a few cables in your system, that have one 1/4 plug at one
end with 2 cables coming out the same length to separate 1/4" plugs.
anytime you knew you were going to 2 separate locations, just use pick up a
"dual" cable.

The issue is reliable 1/4 female jacks that go onto cable if you do 1 or 2.
I have never found really good ones.

Many years ago I bought a bunch of Y adapters at rat shack (I don't
know if they still make them). They have a solid plastic shell with a
1/4" plug at one end and two 1/4" jacks at the other end. No dangling
wires. They work great with MOTM; I was using them as mults for a few
months until I got some 910s.

Here they are! $3.49 each!

;

I used these before I made my home brew Mult module! They’re cheap and they worked great… Plug them in and presto one jack becomes two! If you rotate them 45 they won’t interfere with neighboring jacks!

Just a note, I don't mean to slight radioshack, but i had the same
thing in a TRS version (stereo) and it quit working very quickly.
Just be cautious. I think we'd be better off with those Horizon ones
I was talking about. We could use the "wide opening" Switchcraft
plugs to handle the two cables. I'm sure that Horizon would make 'em
up.

I have been using these for quite some time and the work great. They are
in the stores so go get a few - they come in real handy.

We're all just reinventing the wheel. Check out the following link at
the Moog Archives for a really creative solution:

http://www.moogarchives.com/ go to oddities, then to port-a-pots to see
the move-a-mults.

I think Paul's missing a business opportunity.:-)
