I've made some scans of my recent project. Even though it's one big
19" panel, I've taken care to make the front panel layout to (loosely)
fit into a MOTM setup. My panel of MOTM modules will also be powered
from the JH-5A's PSU. As my own experiments are sometimes related
to forthcoming MOTM modules, you might find this interesting:

Very interesting JH - and it looks great, too. So, are you hinting that the
upcoming MOTM ladder VCF may incorporate this twin-LPF design? I surely
hope so! Have any MP3s to tease us with?

I posted some sound files in August when I had finished the filter:
http://www.oldcrows.net/~jhaible/mp3/
The files with "moog" in the name, mostly wav's, because mp3 does not
work for this kind of sounds.
What you hear is the filter with VCOs and VCA from the (EMS style) Synthi
Clone. The new VCOs and VCAs are better (;->), bit no sound clips yet.

Amazing JH. I would love to see a filter like that in the MOTM line up.
That is indeed beautiful work.

These samples do indeed sound great! A question: I bought Roger
Arrick's ladder filter and noticed a significant amount of hiss,
particularly compared to MOTM filters such as the 440. I noticed
that your samples all had a similar amount of hiss and the character
was essentially the same, too. Is this endemic to ladder filter
designs?

The hiss in my samples comes clearly from the Synthi Clone's
VCA and the rest of the signal path. No such hiss in the
filter (or in the final JH-5A for that matter).
I don't know about the Roger Arrick filter, so I cannot
comment on this. In general, the choice of transistors will
directly have an influence on the noise, for a given
architecture.

Now if you compare the Moog Ladder structure with the SSM2040
or it's descendant, the MOTM-440, the 440 will win in most
every category, *except* that typical "trademark Moog" sound.
It's no secret that the SSM2040 is my all time favorite.
I used to say "you need to have one Moog VCF for that special
sound, but that's enough", and consequently I used a single
(Minimoog clone) Moog style filter and several SSM2040 style
filters all these years. But recently I decided that the
"one Moog filter sound" that I wanted was the one from the
Modular, not from the Mini. I even consider to sell my MidiMini
rackmount Mini clone to make space in the studio. (If anybody
offers me an outrageous amount of money and picks it up at
my home, that is - so it's more than likely that I'll keep
it for a while (;->) ...)

Ah, I forgot, I also have a Moog Taurus I filter clone for some
years now. Clearly too many Moog filters ! (;->)

Many filters = good! I did not really mean to complain, since the
Arrick filter sounds very good. Very Moog-like but I'm not sure if I
can say "sounds like a modular" or "sounds like a mini". I *can* say
that it is not as timbrely complex as the 440. And hiss I can deal
with in my DAW...
