Hi, I'm getting a PowerMac 7100 with an Audiomedia 2 card and Sound designer 2. The card comes with original box and all software. I'm paying 80$ Canadian. Did I make the right choice? Francis [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

I think it's a really good deal. The Audiomedia cards alone go for about that on eBay, and they're pretty rare these days (they were the last nubus cards, the next gen Macs had PCI). Also, the Mac (at 80 MHz I think?) is definitely fast enough to do that work. I've used Sound Designer on an old 16 MHz Mac, and it was "adequate". I started to do the editing on my Mac Pro, then transfer the sound via floppy, until the new Mac OS stopped write support on discs older than OSX; My machine had no Ethernet. If yours has Ethernet, you could try networking, if it doesn't, there were companies that made AppleTalk to Ethernet adaptors. I haven't tested networking a machine with a classic OS to a OSX machine or a PC, though. There could be compatibility issues. Also, there might be other options on the PC side, but I'm not a PC user and don't know. Good luck. That setup was my first "professional" setup (at least, the first one I could do 4 whole tracks of digital audio on), and I remember it fondly. J. It felt like a good. I'm upgrading from a Quadra 700. I set it up with a Ethernet adapter from Apple that uses the wierd connector I don't remember the name of... I share samples with other machine using am FTP server on my NAS. Works great. I wanted the audio card and the software, and the seller is giving me machine as a bonus. So I get higher screen resolution and 16 bit audio. So I said " Why not!". Francis On 2013-08-28 2:31 PM, "Johnny Tomasello" <johnny@...> wrote: > > > > I think it's a really good deal. You can get G3/G4 upgrade cards for these too, to increase the Mhz. I have a 7600 which has PCI and a G4/450. I used to have a Performa 6214CD, but it died (hence I got the 7600). There is an Asante network card available that should work for you if that model didn't have ethernet or if existing onboard doesn't work. Seen em for like $10-15 US on ebay. I configured TCP/IP on my 6214 and was able to transfer data to / from it from my MDD Tower that way using FTP client (Fetch) before I got my Mac Pro. So getting data to / from the machine is certainly possible... Regards, Ted On Wed, Aug 28, 2013 at 11:31 AM, Johnny Tomasello <johnny@...>wrote: > ** > > > I think it's a really good deal. Ted, Regarding your comments about transferring samples from the older Mac: did you try mounting the older machine on the Mac Pro? I was curious if this would work, but couldn't test it without the Ethernet adaptor. The FTP server is a good solution, but I was wondering. Thanks, J. Sent from my iPhone

No, and my new machine I have a USB / firewire card. So I just boot into OS 9, transfer via USB stick, then reboot to 7.6.1, if that is what I am going about doing (specifically for Alchemy, in my case). Sounds complicated to me Ted... I wanted a simple way to copy samples between machines (Macs, Pcs), and I wanted a backup at the same time. Setting up a NAS server, with the services like FTP and friends already installed, it was a quick win. So I set up a directory for all music related stuff. I can access it with FTP, SMB. So I manage it with my PC using SMB, and transfer samples are anything else with either protocol, whatever machine I want. I can even record something on my Android smartphone and dump it there. I'm changing my NAS for one with mirror drives in the next month or so, so I'm even more secure. [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

Nothing at home will ever compare to my day job supporting Unix customers with global clustering, disaster recovery, and replication in Enterprise environments.... Now THAT gets complicated. :-) On Wed, Aug 28, 2013 at 3:19 PM, Francis Cote <francis.cote@...>wrote: > ** > > > Sounds complicated to me Ted... > > I wanted a simple way to copy samples between machines (Macs, Pcs), and I > wanted a backup at the same time. Hey hey! the moment you get married, everything becomes more complicated afterwards. So your work is not that complicated in this perspective. ;) Joking aside, the re-booting to copy and stuff is somewhat more complicated than having a central file server I think. To each his own I guess. I just got back picking up my stuff. I kid you not, the AudioMedia comes with everything. All original disks, SD 2 manual, everything. In absolutely immaculate condition. The Mac has a dead HD, I have to find one in my pile of old stuff somewhere. The deception: it's a 66 mhz, not a 80mhz. Can you imagine the performance I could have had? But seriously, we booted with the original install CD... works fine, with something like 78mb, which makes no sense but I looked really quickly. I think those machines had some on-board RAM, I'll have to check. Nonetheless, it seems to run fine. He also gave me a few Nubus video cards he had, and one is as Asante with an Ethernet port... As my friend said, it looks like I'm building a museum. I'm a software engineer. We develop with Java on Mac. My own machine is a monster Alienware M18x with dual graphics cards and all modern and stuff, but I like playing with those old machines, with the samplers, music. Anyways, I'm glad some of you don't think I've been had! Ted, This link discuses networking OS9 and OSX machines directly together on the same network. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2225866?start=0&tstart=0 This seems like the easiest and least expensive solution so far. I'm not sure if the advice still applies to the latest version of OSX, though. I said earlier that after a certain OSX upgrade (I forget which), OSX did away with write support to any OS9 or earlier media. Since I don't have the Ethernet adaptor, I've never tested this. Also, at this point, I was using the classic Mac to manage my SP 12 library, and copying the sounds to floppy to archive them on my Mac Pro was an easy solution (I could still copy data from the classic disks, just not write to them). If this is something you're interested in trying, I'd be really interested to know how/if it works. Also, if there's a fix with regard to writing to Mac classic OS media that I haven't tried, I'd appreciate any feedback. Any thoughts on this? Thanks, J. Hi guys, The some guy that sold me this "kit" found his TurboSynth manual and Soft synth as well. All original manual and disks. I'm going to pick them up this afternoon. The turbosynth manual is something I've been hoping to find for quite a while. Thank you Jammie! I have the one for emax set up on a Power Book 5300c with os 7.5 that we're prepping to try out on EII and Emax. but noticed EmaxII wasn't in the list. Knowlege of other model coverage for the other versions would be handy. Are funtionalties of the different versions primarily the same? Does the interface cable go to the serial or Mac Talk port? Are there good schematics for making the cable? Appologies for being a newbie!

You can connect a digidesign 442 io to the sound accelerator ii card mentioned below. That's how I use mine in a IIsi with 64mb of RAM. I have a IIci as well but the serial ports seem problematic when trying to use sd for EII. Can't communicate error each time I try to send signals to eii from software control but the if I keep send the command again it responds and communication goes back offline. Switched to the iisi and works everytime. Jammie, think I need to recap my iici? Id love to use that as its far more expandable than the slower smaller iisi. Any thoughts are appreciated. Thanks. -RVK

Thanks.

sounddesigner for emax does not
but if you want to use sounddesigner for all samplers
like i do which means you do samples once then dump them to several machines
as was trhe only way back then but now you have translator software like translator
i use a soundtool2 card which was the pre protools card and came wirth an external
adc/dac and had a scsi 25dsub connection
then there was audiomedia 1 this had the inputs and adc and dac onboard the card
then there was audio media 2 same as first with better motorola dsp chip and better adc/dacs
then there is audiomedia3 this is a pci card all sampler formats and dumping was stopped it was just a poor mans protools card
the first 3 i mentioned require os7 to work correctly as os8 dropped the support for the midi of these cards and why the pci version stopped doing sample support
as digi design were to lazy to redo the midi code to work with os8 that it used with the earlier cards
i use a macIIci with my card 128mb ram and a scsi cf drives very quiet and i use it with my EII EIII mirage dss1 and many others

Hello! Several versions require a "DSP" card. Would anyone give me more information as to this? Thank you!
