i have just fitted a noritake itron vfd to robs emax i talked to manufacturer for the exact vieing area size so that the vfd filled the whole screen

they are very bright blue lighted leters and you get glaring when trying to take photo with a digital camera

by fitting this display you can remove the inverter the caps fot the negitive voltage and the pot for changing the angle as pin 3 is nc

you can remove the dc to ac invertor on the main board this is the component that produces the high pitched wine when el foil is dead

you have to wire single cables as trying to fit a ribbon there is not enough room under the display for it as it needs to be as close to the pcb as posibble as its 3 mm bigger than the original lcd 

they look great and would recomend than fitting other types of backlighted lcd modules less hassle in doing mods as no mods are needed just the wiring its a standard serial 8 bit conection pins 1-14

O va not stress enough just how amazing the vfd is. I put one in my Emax Hd Se rack some months ago and it makes using the emax so much faster because of the increased visibility.  It is hard to take a clear photo because they are too brig for cameras but not too bright to look at ( Like blue LEDs can be if they are the ultra bright ones. ).

it was a rack what version vfd did you use was as i remember the one you 
fitted was smaller than the viewing area and

noritake itron used to do the parallel conection on the side like the 
original then stopped

and did the top connection they are nice blue led letters and they look just 
like the sq80 and asr10 fonts nice and you can add jumpers on the back to 
use different fonts in chineese and japan fonts

i have fitted 1 in an m1 and d50 and am i8n consultation with noritake in 
doing 1 for the t1/t2/t3/sy77/99/kawaiak5000 which uses the same size and 
type screen

Yeah it is slightly smaller than the viewing area but doesn't seem different than the original screen in use to me.
 
Yeah, mine had the wires along the top.  I'd love to see pics of this new wider one you have.  The only other piece I am tempted to VFD is my MPC 1000, maybe the 60 as well, but i imagine that would be quite expensive and possibly risky.

mpc 60 yes the mpc 1000 no they use a funny connection ribbon so you can 
only get the lcd screens from them they did the same with the s1000 upto the 
s3200xl special modules biult for them also the mpc2000 range

so that they can charge \ufffdxxx.xx in money for them when they cost max of 
40-80 pounds

Im picking up my SE keyboard this weekend as its been in storage far too long. i remeber the backlight being gone and the inverter-driver making a pitch noise.
Could you run us through the vfd install step by step?

you need to take out mother board and remove invertor by desoldering it 

you need to remove the front display take out the display they just pull of as they are not soldered
you need to remove the slide connectors from the the pcb with a solder pump be very carefull as the pads are week and to much heat will make them lift

they are in 2 rows of 7 you can leave the ones for the backlight connection as there is no connection needed for the back light as there is not one

now you need to wire in 13 cables missing pin 3 26awg cable

now solder pin 1 on pcb 

the numbers go

13    14
11    12
09    10
07    08
05    06
03    04
01    02

and on the vfd its

1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14

so solder pin 1 to pin one on vfd

then 2 -2 
miss pin 3 -3 as thats the angle and its not used on the vfd as there is no angle on the vfd is nc any way 

4-4
5-5
6-6
7-7
8-8
9-9
10-10
11-11
12-12
13-13
14-14

leave 1 inch slack of cables so that you can move lcd into place easily

now tape up the soldered holes with insulation tape as vfd is going to sit over some of them

place the vfd over 1 set of holes near to the back light 

fit a screw wit hwasher onto vfd from front 

place 1 washer and a nut and clap the screw to the vfd place washer up to nut place vfd through hole on pcb 

allign so vfd is straight and mark the pcb making sure it does not come into contact with any traces

now mark pcb and drill with a hss drill bit

now fit the scew and washers and nuts to the vfd and place the vfd screwws through both holes and affixe to pcb replace 

pcb front panel

fit motherboard

remove psu and replace all caps so that you are fully servicing the machine

are you going to make it scsi compatible if so i do a board exchange scsi for non scsi board and £100

also do the slim floppy convertors £17

if your not confident in doing the work 

i do the vfd labour upgrade for £40

i do the psu refurb for £40

and if you have the scsi upgrade already i do the upgrade for £50

Hi its the plus version already with scsi so i wont need the upgrade.
I might be in touch at some point for the repairs though.

but mostly the same you have to remove the slide headers

im still servicing return customers gear but im doing less and less due

to my producing and making things

im slowing down on repairs as im producing more and more and im just finding it hard to alot time for service ill be keeping my full time service contracts as im contracted for that for the next few years

but its becoming financially harder to do having to wait for people to pay me waiting months for payments and i have needed to sort alternative work to live

if you need stuff doing pm me direct and let me know what you need doing

but i have shut down now for Christmas all the 3 items i have left to service will be done this week and then i wont take any more work until the second week in January

when my production explodes in the new year then i will only be consulting

Hi Jammie,
Well i was after " i do a board exchange scsi for non scsi board and £100"
But would prefer my own motherboard fitted with scsi .
Would it be wise to order a scsi kit in preperation for fitting?
Lastly how much will it be for 

A) you to fit a scsi kit in my own emax motherboard 

B) me to prepurchase a scsikit so its ready and i send you my motherboard and kit to fit?
And what will the turn around times be like? 

Shall i simply contact you mid January?

Just remember you will need a SCSI Device to be set to 0. If you don't have an Emax HD then whatever device you use, even external devices, will need to be set to 0 to be recognized. Therefore standard external Zip drives that can only be set to ID 5 or 6 will not work.

Hey Jammie,

Not to hijack this thread (as it does kind of pertain to this), I have an Emax II Rack, Emax II Keyboard and an EII. What is the easiest way for me to replace all their displays. Is there no such thing as drop in replacements anymore or do all current displays require the pinout altered due to pin location and pinout configuration?

Is there any way to just replace the backlights with a current long lasting backlight? The reason I ask is because I use my Emu's lot for music and I am focusing on building some Eurorack modules at the moment so, the easier this would be, the better.

The e2 uses a different screen

There is no drop in replacements I just remove the old display add a header in reverse so it comes out the back of the screen board I then wire a new cable with header to the display I then add some bolts and rubber vibration washers you have to drill new holes as the screen size is the same but the pcb os smaller and it has an inline row.

The reason I do it that way is the tracks are crap on the emu boards the wave soldering damages the pads and even with the correct equipment and low temp they can still lift

So I add the header and through hole rovets for and bad pads

This allows to just replace the screens and jusr soldwr on the header cable

The racks can only have 2 bolts and you have to be careful as you need to drill a hole very close to one track to center it

On the keyboard its ok as the tracks are under the screen you just need to place the screen on the furthest holes from the header to center it and drill 2 new holes

The e2 uses the same screen as the sp12 the connection is reversed and is on the bottom of the pcb

The connections are on the new screens

14/13/12/11/10/9/8/7/6/5/4/3/2/1/15/16

So you have to be careful as connecting it wrong can damage the screen and the special pal chip that deals with the memory buss and cpu for the screen information via the button scanner circuits

The standard oleds that work on the emax dont work correctly on the eii

The only drop in replacement is a vfd screen that is a 1 for one pin replacement the screen os the same size but the pcb is larger and fits the original holes

As of yet there is no direct oled replacement
