pc psu

2005-11-11 by davide aprea

hello there, i'm new to this list.
i just bought an emax rack without psu (well, it was there, but all the
wires were cut, i did remove it). i searched the list archive and
read about original psu replacement issues.
but what about using a normal pc power supply? they are everywhere to be
found for cheap and able to feed those +-5v and 12v emax needs.

So should i buy one of those pc psu, or collect more money and get an
original one (if epr electronics can deliver it in italy)?
aren't they the same thing after all?

thanks, i hope to revive it soon.
(it seems the problem was someone plugged it into a 220v socket, but i
was setted for 110v. hope the psu is the only thing that got burned)

ciao, davide

Hi !
I did a PSU replacement on a Emu EMAX S.E. rack some months ago... The
original PSU failed in a capacitor and schkotty diod ... I never find
those parts in my area, and a new psu was around $80 (but as i'm living
in belgium ... the cost is much more expansive with additionals taxes).
So i did the "swap" myself between a typical ATX PSU and the original one...

It's really simple. Just use a voltmeter ... A typical ATX can provide
-12v / -5 / +5 easily (the ATX psu is much more powered than the emu
one). There are enought space inside the Emax. I used a special glue to
maintain the PSU.
The sad side is you'll get the PSU fan noise but the sampling process is
not affected (noise parasits ...) !
The ON-OFF Wire on a ATX psu could be found here :
http://www.helpwithpcs.com/courses/power-supply-basics-inc-pinouts.htm

You have to close the circuit between PS_ON & a GND pin to get the PSU ON.

Hope this help,
J/M

Re: [emax] pc psu

this is great news Jean-Marc, thank you very much! i'm gonna try it soon!

last question : originally there were 3 different sources for every
different voltage on the psu, and also 3 different spots on the board.
is it safe if I wire the 3 equally labeled connectors on the board to
the same voltage source instead of having 3? (can I short ,say ,more
-12v connectors on the board together, and wire them to the same -12v
connector on the psu?).
I'm asking because atx psu features only one -12v source and of course
because i'm dumb.

thanks a lot!

Hi Davide,
In fact i did just one common connector on the ATX psu to deliver power
: It's the -12V.
For the others voltage i've choose each time a separate power wire from
the PSU ...
So, the common -12V from the ATX PSU seems powered enough for the Emax :)
Hope your Emax will rebirth for long years ! ;-)

IC35

2005-12-16 by davide aprea

Dear list,
i just installed a new psu on an emax rack (thanks JeanMarc!) and i'm
testing it.
it works but voices are missing.
another flaw, the most annoying, it is some notes get stucked requiring
a panic button push. it is totally unplayable
After running the ERAM test in the diagnostic menu, it says error
detected caused by IC35. sometimes it says IC??
Do someone know which IC is the one number 35?
I guess i can just open up the machine, IC numbers should be written
on the board, anyway: any suggestion?

thanks!

IC35 is labeled TMS4256-15NL
it should be something like a ram chip.
i wonder if it is responsible for the stucked notes problem which is the
most annoying one.
i don't really care for missing notes, i will have a go at the filter
calibration procedure to see if i can find which is the missing voice.
then maybe swapping a couple ssm filters and vcs from a dead siel
expander will do the work.
I don't know anything electronics, sorry if i'm talking nonsense:)

thanks,
davide

i meant filters and vcA, sorry for offending you with my incompetence
and flooding the list!

Hi davide ! Really glad to know your new psu seems to work quite well
with your emax ! :)

Mine is labelled "MB81256-12" from Fujitsu and it is a ram memory
(256Kx1 NMOS, DIP16). It costs usualy about $6 or $7...
But i don't know if your keys trouble is linked to this chip .. :(

Hope you'll find what's wrong with your emax !
Jean-Marc.

Re: [emax] IC35

2005-12-16 by davide aprea

merci beaucoup JM!
i'm gonna replace it soon, it is quite a cheap component :)

anyway now all of a sudden my emax works! all the voices are playing
now, and even the arpegiator works ok, stuck notes are no more.
maybe problems were due to no one playing it since long time. Also many
of the accompaning floppies are somewhat corrupted, they get loaded but
don't play correctly.
it sounds really sweet!
it seems i won't go to sleep tonight.

thanks,
d
